What is a leak down test? Same as consumption test?

Sorry to hear OP. Man that sucks. As everyone has said the oil consumption is unacceptable. Totally agree. Lots of good advise here. I know I would not be happy and I would be looking for answers. My 2020 has 14K and oil changes every 5K. No oil consumption at all between those changes. Get a second opinion at private shop and different dealer. Fight Toyota for a replacement engine or unfortunately consider selling it. What a bloody PITA.

Tests the integrity of your engine’s pistons/cylinders to know if you are “burning” oil (where are you loosing the oil). A reputable shop can do it for 1-2 hours of labor if you can’t absolutely get anywhere with the dealers. They’ll interpret those results for you. Take that to the dealer. Only save that as a last resort if the dealer won’t do that test for you.

“Burning” that much oil will eventually cause other parts to fail (catalytic converters, mass airflow sensor, will gum up your valves, etc).

Most engines today won't smoke due to the cats in the exhaust system...they will vaporize any oil residue from the heat they produce. Sometimes you can detect the smell if oil is being burnt.

I've talked with a buddy that runs his own independent repair garage. He's seen dozens of these 3.5 v6 toyota engines that they've done oil changes every 10k miles or more on with over 100k miles on the odo. He can't recall any that use more than 1/2 quart every 10k miles. Told me running excessive rpm on these engines all the time, they don't like. Keep them under 2500 rpm, and they'll last forever.

    Update:

1/7/22 @ 16k miles: Had my oil changed and Tacoma serviced.

4/15/22 @17.5k miles: Low engine light came on, I added 2 quarts.

    6/21/22 @ 20k miles: I'm 1.5 to 2 quarts low, again.

I checked oil and looked for any visible signs of leaking. No drips, no visible oil in or around engine. Next steps will be to escalate to corporate and pull plugs. I may also get an independent opinion from a qualified shop.

Go back to the dealer first. Your first interval exceeded the max consumption they quoted, so I would tell them that and say, now what?

My 2021 Offroad doesn’t do this. Sounds like a bad ring or something.

ooo...normally I'd say with those symptoms it could be any/all, just off the top of my head; leaking spark plug tube seals, valve stem seals, or the piston rings are letting oil slip by but such a low mileage engine...unless it ran dry for a bit. possibly the crankcase ventilation system check valve could be bad and letting oil in but that's me reaching for ideas.

let it sit overnight then in the am pull a spark plug and see if there is oil on the plug or in the tube and if you can rent a bore scope and look into the cylinder of the removed plug (looking for oil, takes experience to spot scored walls sometimes) and if you have a bore scope you can take off the intake and peek into the intake manifold and look for oil there. might at least help you narrow down the source.

unless you have warranty still in which case let them diagnose it...never take stuff apart on a warrantied product ;)

How did you break in the motor? Did you baby it and lug it a lot ?
Personally I would change the oil to M1 0w-40 euro spec and then go find some long ass downhills, get the truck up to temp and let the truck compression brake down the hill a bunch of times. Let it get as high of revs as possible during the comp braking. Don’t lug it at anytime. Sometimes this will break free a stuck oil control ring.

Or see another toyota dealer. This sounds outrageous for that kind of mileage for a fairly new truck.

OP, that does not sound normal at all. I’ve had several jelopies that didn’t burn that much oil. Is it not smoking like a 2-stroke? Oil smoke typically has s bluish color. No puddles of oil on the ground where you park it? Are you checking the level before adding oil? It’s not an issue with the oil level sensor? Stuff is not adding up for me.

I literally broke it in according to the manual’s spec. No excessive speeds or acceleration within a specified milaeage window. This is my fourth Toyota (have owned 4Runner’s and tacomas) and this hasn’t happened to any of my previous vehicles. Something is wrong…I just need to get Toyota to acknowledge it and fix it within the warranty period.

It’s smoking blue-ish exhaust (not excessive, but visible). Not like a 2-stroke but definitely smoking.

Oil catch can could possibly detect the oil bypass.

I'd be doing a compression test on that engine. They can claim a excessive amount of oil consumption is normal, but I'd like to see them justify a cylinder, or 2, or 3 with low compression.

My same rig at 26k miles uses Zero oil between 10k miles oil changes. Start researching lemon laws and follow the above advice until you get pissed off and then pay for a good lawyer. 1qt every 1200 miles means you would add a complete oil change during their published change interval. Fuck that!
