2020 TRD Pro AT, 18 City, 22mpg Hwy? Not Even Close...

Bought a 2020 TRD Pro , Automatic Trans, last October.

Bone stock. Well, added light weight step bars and a Truxedo soft tonneau, nothing else. I do not carry anything but myself and the GF at times, she's tiny, about 100lbs I'm not a 500lber either, no huge tool boxes, etc.

Averaging 15.4mpg city, 17.5 highway. Based off actual fuel up mileage, not the computer.

I drive like a grandpa. No rabbit starts, nothing. I do not live in mountain country. I live in the middle of WI in farm land.

I'm using the same 87 octane 10% Ethanol fuel I used in the FJ, from the same stations as always. The other cars I fill there have not dropped in mileage, so it's not a new blend.

Had a 2008 FJ, got 16.5mpg city year round, 21 highway, since the day I bought it new. Window sticker on that was 16c, 20h. And that truck is shaped like a refrigerator box, sat higher and had the huge roof rack too, with Duratracs on the wheels. Zero aero advantage.

Toyota claims 18 city, 22 hwy on the Pro on 87 octane.

I consider such a difference from what I'm getting in reality really disappointing.

I like the truck and thankfully do not use it for a lot of miles, but come on Toyota, I expected way better from a truck with ten times more tech to aid in efficiency than the FJ had.

    ______________UPDATE APRIL 2020_______________
To update this, I waited until it was warmer to revisit the mileage complaints I had as some suggested.

I'm now getting 18mpg city and 21 highway with grandpa style non-aggressive driving and temps averaging in the 40s-50s most days.

This is on regular grade pump gas, 10% ethanol.

The dash computer claimed 18.8mpg average for the tank so that seems close to accurate too.

So I think many that said their Tacos were really affected by cold weather mileage were pretty spot on now that I've had time to experience it myself.

I hate to say it but it's all driving habits, climate, the terrain, too many variables. Not speaking of the Pro specifically, though I doubt it's that's drastic of a difference I can confirm Tacomas (third gens for this conversation) do get 20+ mpg on the hwy, or can.

You have to take the numbers on the window with a grain of salt though, it was tested and tried in a very specific set of conditions that could be replicated across all vehicles for a general standard. Those aren't real life numbers. Hell, I get 15mpg in the city due to all the lights, but others in different cities may get more due to longer distances between stops.

Need more than a one tank avg, corn gas will give you less mileage than real dinosaur juice.

Drive like grandpa and you get 21. Keep your foot in it and you're getting 15. Hills and flat land make a huge difference as does city/country. I can get 16.5 or 20.

My mile per gallons improved as my truck got broken in, and the winter fuel/ cold weather takes a toll.

Still gets great fuel economy compared to my Dakota V6 with a 5 speed MT, so I am happy averaging around 20 mixed local and highway.

Since I was able to meet and usually exceed the specs given the the FJ, it would stand to test using the Tacoma in the exact same conditions should yield closer to what they claim as well.

KIA lost a huge lawsuit over gas mileage claims, they had to send my parents a rebate check for years, if Toyota isn't careful enough people will complain and they'd lose too.

I've noticed a lot of differences between a truck made in San Antonio compared to the FJ made 100% in Japan. And this is just another one.

Sad to say, but if Toyota is going to keep producing 'Murican brand quality trucks with all kinds of issues, why not save a few bucks and buy 'Murican branded trucks? Not like I keep them off warranty to worry about reliability anyway.

I've used more than one tank since October....

Do people actually read posts or just reply with a canned answer?

Not unusual for winter driving. Mine dropped 3+ mpg

Thanks! That's a real answer and I appreciate it.

Maybe the programming is off for cold weather? Dumping too much fuel?

No I'm telling you the 18/22 is average. You have mountains. You're not getting either.

I'm sorry, what mountains are in Wisconsin?

I have to admit, even in winter, I'm getting 22 mpg on a run at times. It varies, but 22 isn't uncommon.

Mid 20's in summer. Mine's not a pro, but your drinking a lot.

When I had Duratracs my mileage plummeted, hard.

Not sure what you have for tires, but have you checked the pressure?

Look up how a bed covers effects MPG. Some people see a hit with them, other claim to see an increase. Researching the science behind it might help you understand why you get what you get

    Thanks!

Stock GoodYear Adventure Kevlars. They are really smooth ATs. Pretty much street tires compared to the Duratracs I had on the FJ.

Aired at 35, door says they should be 32 but 35 feels a bit stiffer without hitting buck board level of ride.

The Pro has it's own 18-22 rating, the regular V6 Tacomas say 19c-24h.

    Thanks!

You'll definitely get better mileage when the weather warms up. Maybe you truly are grandpa driving, but I bet you could push another 2+ mpg if you really want it. I've averaged above EPA ratings in all my vehicles. It's possible something is wrong with your truck, but it's very unlikely.

I agree! I shut it off going downhill. Yeah, I lose power steering and brakes, but it's more fun that way. ;)

No I read it. I did think you said it did have mountains and knew most farmland around here is rolling hills so sorry.

But I can literally drive ridiculously grandpa like and get 20 or my normal 17-18.

So I read it 3 times now and think you should sue for the misrepresentation or get used to it.
