Hey all! I will be moving the data port from the front of the truck to the center console when my parts arrive. We all know the headache of the charge only ports in the center console and how nice it would be to have our phones hooked up in the for carplay or android auto! The plan is simple (in my head at least) I did not find any dedicated thread that showed success so I figured I would start this up for yall.

I have seen around multiple forums that this will work for the 2020 Tacoma NON JBL. I figured it's only 10 bucks so no hard no foul if it doesn't work. I plan to plug this into the back of the stock entune radio which will disable the front usb are you will be unplugging it. I plan on re-purposing that slot at another point in time.

This is the extension I will be running under the trim into the center console. It can easily replace the plug in there with the charge only ports but I plan on drilling a new hole and epoxying it.

As soon as these parts come in, I will update this thread with pics and progress!

Good luck with this. I thought of just pushing my factory port back inside the dash and running an extension cable from it to the relocation spot. I guess I didn't realize my radio just had a regular usb connection back there. Your way seems cleaner.

rotated tires changed oil threw out the old air freshener.
Did I read "somewhere" that some head units can support a two port hub? Two USB inputs, with the active one selectable.

I thought it was here somewhere, but I can't locate it atm. I did look for a 2 port automotive hub based on the inspiration, but haven't purchased one yet.

A full data plug in the center console AND the dash plug option would be very desirable.

Nice, I did this exact thing, except I just pushed the usb/aux plug back into the dash, and ran a usb/aux extension into the center console (drilled a hole and mounted next to the 2x usb power ports that are already in there in my 19)

I wish there was a way to double the Data port in teh 20/21's so I can use Android Auto AND a USB Thumb Drive with my Music on it at the same time

UPDATE - alright friends! so the good news first --
The adpater i got from ali express works perfect! There is one catch tho.... it only supports usb2 cables
I tested the usb 3 extender from Amazon and the head unit would not recognize it. I also tried plugging usb 3 to C cables in the ali express adapter and would not get any signal
As soon as i changed to a usb2 to C - it loaded up android auto! I'm in the process of re-routing the cable now

    EDIT 5/22/21
It does work with USB3 cables. The amazon flush mount doesnt tho

@ryanvar42 yesir that's correct! if you want to extend it further, just look for any usb 2.0 extension cable

Just a heads up I bought that exact same one on Amazon to retrofit on my 4th gen 4Runner and while it's cheap it's pretty laggy. Not 100% sure if that's because of the USB extension itself or my JVC Carplay/Android Auto headunit it's attached to, but still something to think about...

    Alright everyone! All done...

    Recap -
    Parts Needed -
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N97LFKR/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8 - unavailable now but something similar should work. The original flish mount i posted first does not work with the new plug so i had this lying around and put it to use
    https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4000904194171.html
    Some good epoxy

    Steps -

1.) Take out the stock radio by popping off the trim around it. 10 clips total, comes off easily. There are 4 10mm bolts holding the radio in. Take them out and pull the radio right off. Unplug the old usb hardness that runs to the front data port and replace it with the ali express cable. I ran mine down the right side and tucked it behind the trim.
    image_2021-05-22_154632.jpg
    20210520_123249.jpg
2.) Once you pop off the trim for the center area... you can feed the cable under it. To get the trimoff, press down on the sifter knob clip. This will allow you to unscrew the shift knob. After that, pull off the trim fro the REAR, right before the center console and make your way forward. You dont need to take it completely, just enough to tuck the cable.
    upload_2021-5-22_15-14-31.jpg
3.)Run the cable along the side, make sure to not let it get in the way of the shifter. You can then plug in the USB extender
    upload_2021-5-22_15-16-56.jpg
4.) if you look right above the box, you can see i drilled a pilot hole for where I would be putting the USB female end. I simply cut it out to shape with an exacto knife
    upload_2021-5-22_15-18-24.jpg
5.) I wedged the cable in there and then hit it on the back with some epoxy
    upload_2021-5-22_15-18-57.jpg
    upload_2021-5-22_15-20-31.jpg
6.) Here is the inside, nice and hidden. Just need to clean up the scraps!
    upload_2021-5-22_15-19-28.jpg
Final product below! I now have android auto coming from my center console! I will be using the old slot from the previous usb for my bass control knob

Thank you! However didn’t you say we need a usb 2 not 3 cable from the back of the head unit so it would link properly? ? Post #7

hey @ryanvar42 -- so -- the original Amazon flush mount USB3 did not work... I believe that was due to lack of quality. That blue cable i used, is USB3 as well, i think its just a better cable that allowed the proper voltage to flow thru it for data.
so a recap - The ali express cable to the back of the head unit with the usb3 extender (non flushmount) works perfect!

    Nothin crazy yet...
Thank you for the very detailed post!! Ive been wondering this since finding out the factory console usb's only offered power.

What Im now wondering is if I could somehow change out one of the front-facing usb's on the 3TPAM ($200+) mount to offer the same android auto functionality.

CRIPES! I just got my TACO & my head has been spinning with all the cool shit I wanna do / organize / customize / etc.

    This is awesome
    Thanks again

@minkmendor so would it be possible to splice into that USB media cable and have android auto from a different new cable while maintaining the stock USB?

you can't splice usb cables together. it basically means that usb devices 'argue' with each other to which gets the connection until no one gets the connection.

there used to be an antique manual usb selector switch that did the trick, but it was usb2 only. though i was quite sure this truck was usb2 only anyways...
