What makes the Bronco able to withstand a front locker with an IFS from factory yet
a front locker in a Tacoma is heavily frowned upon?

If you think a front locker is heavily frowned upon you gotta get a new group of friends.

Anytime people mention wanting a front locker there's a handful of guys saying don't do it.

Does anyone care to actually answer the question or?

    Yeah.
With a rear locker and all the other electronic aids, it's probably overkill unless you are rock crawling or something. At that point you are probably doing a lot more to the drivetrain than just a front locker. Not frowning on it, personally, just think it is overkill for most people.

I guess you could always buy a Colorado ZR2 if you want a truck with a factory front locker so badly.

I'm not sure why people are pretending it's not frowned upon, it's very common on TW and I'm guilty of it too. There's a much larger risk of front end carnage with a locked front end. That said, I want one now after my recent wheeling trip. I still don't recommend it to 99% of people on TW.

Regardless of your position, you will ALWAYS have a handful of people saying don't do it. Naysayers, I call 'em. Put a locker in your truck and enjoy it!

Because the people that frown upon don't actually wheel. It's not common. It's a few guys out of a group of a few hundred thousand members. Why didn't Toyota put one in from the factory? Who knows.

We get it, you wheel. I wheel too. I still don't recommend it for most people because people are dumb and will cause more harm than good with one. A rear locker and a winch is fine for most anyone.

edit: maybe I have a different mentality being on the east coast as well. Here, there are an abundance of trees so if I can't make it over something, it takes two seconds to run a winch cable and pull myself through. Out west I'm sure it's not as easy so a front locker would be more beneficial and necessary.

People who frown upon it don’t wheel their trucks hard enough to need it. I have an ARB in the front and will admit that it has cost me several CV axles but other than that no added cost or maintenance (aside from the locker itself).

People will snap CVs left and right on broncos with Factory 35s and Ford will be happy to deny warranty coverage for abuse just like every other manufacturer.

I agree 99% of people will never need it. That doesn't change the fact they are useful as hell.

See my edit on my previous post. I also agree that they're useful as hell, just maybe less necessary on this coast which is why I think the way I do.

This was exactly what I was looking for. So in turn there is really nothing that separates factory Bronco's using front lockers than Tacoma guys with front lockers.

I suppose Ford could be shipping them with a super heavy duty RCV kind of axle but I doubt it. You can always do RCVs for the taco too. If I didn’t buy my Samurai I would get a set of RCVs for the Tacoma.

I have driven vehicles with a front locker...and with it on turning is damn near impossible. Weight is usually distributed to the rear of a vehicle struggling uphill, and theres no cv joints etc on the rear to break...making it a stronger location for a locking diff.

If you are wheeling places that you think require a front locker...then by all means get one- people spend money on other mods that are a lot dumber imo.

If you want a front locker, have one installed. Why let people from TW dictate what you do?

Side bar: So, who has the best deals on front axles? I’m adding my friend is adding a front locker to my his truck. Figure it’s worth carrying a spare.

If it's a trail spare just pick up a NAPA CV. They make a new unit and a reman. Get the new unit. It's only a few bucks more. And make sure you carry a 35mm socket so your not that guy. lol

I hear @EatSleepTacos is really good at making sure the axle nut is threaded properly before cranking it down with an impact.

NMD 944082 is the part number you want, I just bought two of them. They seem like nice quality, much nicer than the auto zone one I had to get mid trail run.

Not sure if it's still going on but they have the "buy 3+ things, get 20% off" deal. I got two axles and a tie rod delivered to my door for $223.
