They can use it on the car they were passed by on the same lap if there's a 2nd DRS zone. Usually since the car passed someone using DRS they have enough of a lead the car they passed won't be close enough to use DRS back on them.

Not sure if it is accurate throughout all tracks that have multiple DRS zones but some only have 1 detection point meaning the overtaking driver would have DRS enabled in both zones whereas the driver being overtaken would not get DRS in the second zone if they were ahead (and more than 1 second behind any car in front of them) in the detection zone

Yea I’m pretty sure I remember on several circuits where the driver gets by with drs then still has it in the next zone further pulling away

Not a DRS fan. I'd rather see an allotment of extra boost. Like 90 seconds that you can use whenever until it is gone. Use it to get a great first few laps or save it to the end or whatever. Adds another strategy element instead of the same "flap-open" every lap at the same spot(s).

Ah, makes sense. Didn't know they get the DRS for the full lap (if there are multiple DRS zones).

I think the FIA are looking at the problem the wrong way. The need for DRS was to address the huge wake of dirty air that the following car has to contend with. I've long been a proponent of removing most of the aero grip created by the wings that cause this disturbance behind them. Let's pull all the wings off, put wider tires on for more mechanical grip, make them durable so they create fewer marbles (more racing lines) and create passing opportunities that way. I'm thinking of a modern car that looks more like Jim Clark's Lotus 49.

Right on! Clip the wings and go mechanical grip. Let's see those beasts slide!

i like that idea but i saw Ross Brawn say somewhere that reducing downforce to that point, where mechanical more or less takes over as the thing, would slow the cars so much it wouldn't make sense for F1. braking zones would probably double in length.

That is exactly what's needed. Longer braking zones, more opportunity for errors or rewards big balls for braking late. Imagine a super late braking maneuver, getting all sideways into a corner and coming out in front. Sensitive asses like Senna's would shine.

Mods? We don't need no stinking mods.
I'd rather go back to dirty air/no passing than know that the trailing car has a 101% chance of passing the lead car on a straight because of DRS.

There is absolutely zero suspense in F-1 these days.
