That all depends on where you’re going. If your group is heading to red, the only allowed camp site is east of the lake at the gatekeeper going to coyote. If you’re at coyote, you can camp anywhere.

brewer: plenty of camping spot along the lake and plenty of designated campgrounds at the turnout off highway 168 at tamarack snow park heading to brewer.

bald mountain: there’s a ton of campground off rock creek road before the gate for bald. Unless you come from tamarack side (I call it the mall trail to bald) which is a longer route but most of the time, you’ll be in 2wd. There’s plenty of obstacles to test your rig if you chose to do so (Hollywood hill, vrock, posi to name a few) when heading to bald unless you just take the trail directly to the tower, which is no fun.

camp fire might not be allow, check before you burn. The streams around there have natural rainbow, brooks, and some brown. Bring your pole and license.

@Kwikvette at this point the wife is more excited for this trip than I am

We'll go through the list of trails you posted later... regardless of what gets decided the 2 of us are down for anything. I'm going to get my sliders welded on after I finish the steering and suspension upgrade, that way if the skinny pedal doesn't get us through hopefully there's a winch in front and behind us to pull us out

    :pout:

I did actually ride last weekend, and there was a trip to the hospital, but at least it wasn't me this time. Riding same place that I broke myself, with the same guy I was riding with, but this time he dumped it and tore some ligaments in his knee.

I told him to stop being a little bitch, and that he's half assing this whole injury thing.

She is purdy with them dirt tires.

Update; with the closures that have been in place for awhile now, I'm unable to scout out possible camp areas.

Hoping the closures end soon but with all the fires, who's to say.

One more week I believe until the forest closure either ends or gets extended... Hopefully we'll know soon :fingerscrossed:

So what's the word, we're t-minus 4 weeks until the (tentative?) dates listed on the main page...those confirmed? Wife is pushing for me to let her know so she can plan her own thing while I'm gone lol.

I was literally just thinking of this.

The smoke is bad, and several places are closed.

Being this close to crunch time, I almost need to say we should probably look for an alternative spot.

Hmm yeah might be good to have a second choice if this doesn't pan out.

I wanna say by the time Oct comes around the fires usually start to let up, but who knows since it seems worse every year. And the Sierra have been getting it real bad. That smoke actually made its way to us for the first time yesterday, whole town was in an amber overcast all day long.

Only other options I can think of that aren't up north near the fires are down here. Or the desert but...meh

Miller Jeep is fun but it's just a one day trail, although its near Gorman Valley OHV which has a network of mostly fire roads. Lots of camping options at Gorman but it draws the whole ATV/SxS/motorhome crowd.

I feel like I've been out of the local 4x4 game for almost 2 years now so I don't really know much anymore lol.

Yeah I wouldn't mind just calling it to go to a spot close your way, especially if it's safe from any fires and smoke.

There is another new fire up by Redding, started Wednesday and is blowing a lot of smoke down this way already. On the bright side a lot of the forest gates are open again but they could close at any time.

This was during the height of Caldor fire, my house is right near the middle of the pic below. It got down to 10 miles from my house (western edge) before they knocked it down (at least on this side).

Fuck, I didn't even know the scale went that high, lol

    Ewww....

Hopefully by October the Forests open back up. Most are open already, but looks like Sierra NF has select closures thru Oct 15.

Air is worse here today than it was yesterday.

Some of this is light dirt but a lot of it is ash -

    20210924_105626.jpg

Pretty bad when the only reason why it isn't scorched earth here is because the smoke clouds block out the sun.
