Gotta be honest, this seems pretty simple, get a meeting with the highest person you can at the dealer

Walk in, and tell them to prove that an action that is part of the operation of the vehicle was used incorrectly and caused this problem. It doesn’t matter one bit what they think. It’s what they can prove.

There is no way this is a non warranty repair, they will fix it, you may have to throw a lawyer at them which is stupid but they can not prove anything you did caused this, it’s normal operation of the vehicle!

That was the stupidest answer a dealer has ever given. First off your under warranty, doesn't matter if it's their fault, or yours. It's covered by Toyota. When you bought that truck you paid for two trucks/100% replacement, repairs or lemon. 1/3 for trick you got, 1/3 for repair/replacement, and 1/3 their build cost profit. Only cost Toyota 10k to 15k to build that truck, labor and parts OTD.

4G63 was legendary for its failure points. I blew one up myself haha.

OP, the dealer doesn’t want to repair this. In no world did you holding the clutch in on a low mileage, average torque six cylinder engine at red lights wear your thrust bearings and lead to the dreaded crankwalk dance. However, the dealer is going to fight tooth and nail. Call corporate yesterday.

    Tony,
Thanks for the lead was able to research and get myself comfortable with the whole thing and went to the service manager guns loaded. Dealer submitted my claim to corporate and I should have an answer tomorrow, sounded promising but I am not about to roll over! They pulled my record and realized I have purchased 6 brand new Toyota vehicles since 2005, said brand loyalty helps. We will see how much

They totally do. Maybe the dealer trying to squeeze customer money which is more than warranty money.

Idling in gear wears out the throw out bearing but even that takes a long time. Their claim is bogus since they can’t prove you we even doing it let alone that it was the cause. If they hold to this bs tell them you’ll lawyer up and hit them for damages on top of repairs.

The dealer has their shop full of non-warranty work and doesn’t want to divert profitable bay and tech to this unless you pay out of pocket for full rate.

As others have said, be ready to open a case with Toyota corporate.

I had a dealer in Long Beach try this on me regarding replacing my frame under the frame lawsuit extended settlement. They could make waaaaaayyyy more money doing other things with the tech/bay instead of waiting weeks for a new frame and a moderate Toyota payment for labor. I had to escalate to the shop manager and then make a call to Toyota so they could then ‘clarify’ to the dealer the warranty service obligation they signed up for by being a Toyota dealer.

I put 199,999 miles on my older tacoma, never had a clutch issue. None. Zero. Nada. Nothing.
I rode that clutch like a monkey riding a tiger too.

I know for a fact the second owner drove it for another 5 years to boot.

That was how I pushed back, got them to confirm the throw out bearing was fine, no clutch malfunctions, no noise or vibration. Told them they couldn’t prove the clutch was the cause and I couldn’t prove it was a manufacturing error because it is already grenaded.

Yep, dealer filed the claim today, hopefully they agree to cover it 100%. Should know tomorrow if all goes well.

My advice would be to get everything they just told you in writing. I drove manuals in the UK for 20 years and never heard of anything like this

Best of luck with all this. They are being shady. Although holding the clutch is not ideal, blaming that amount of wear on it is absurd.

I would just smile and walk out. THEN let them get the lawyer letter/call. Why let them prepare for it?

GM hosed me on a warranty job long ago, both under the regular powertrain plus their secret warranty on the old Colorado head issues. One dealer told me flat out I have to pay cash and then deal with the main office myself, since he loses $30 an hour on the labour plus loses parts markup and he isn't going to do that. What a crock.

Long Beach CA I presume? I mean I guess in your case it did require them to be educated re the frame. My friend's Tacoma lived in MA for 9 years before she moved to NC and when the frame rotted in the 12 years no dealer knew about the program at first, once she showed them and had the backup of the history of its location they took care of it.

My wife's 96 Tacoma was at 170K on the original clutch and probably had a while more to go before it was bought back.

Firebirds never came with 454s :D

Warranty absolutely does not cover issues an owner causes. It's for manufacturing defects. With that said I don't think this was caused by op and should be covered by warranty.
