There are times when I miss my NASCAR hard card. Then I remember what a shit show it can be during rain delays. Especially at Daytona, pre-renovation, when they would corral all of the fans out of the stands into a stretch on "the hill" (built up area behind the start/finish line) that was roughly 3/8 of a mile long and 20-30 feet wide. The crowd was packed in so tight you could barely walk through it. Bars started running out of booze, concession stands ran out of food, beer sheds ran out of beer...

    Yeah. Fuck that shit.

I LOATHE rain delays. My first was the Busch Clash at Daytona a couple of years back. It was frustrating because they could've gotten the whole race in but all the pre-race malarky and driver intros took more time to complete than the actual running length of the race. The rain showed up and that was that. We spent the night in our infield tent and managed some sleep with headphones on due to the track dryers running late into the night. They ran the next afternoon, which was fine. We were given Rolex suite passes which was cool. We were nearly out of spending $ by that point so I told my kid to pack his gullet with all the free prime rib he could handle.

Darlington last year was a pain because it was an absolute downpour on top of the heat & humidity. Luckily, our hotel was nearby. We waited there until 20 minutes before the green flag, then made our way into the track with no traffic at all. The race started something like 4 hours late so we only stayed until midnight before watching the ending in our cool, dry hotel room.

I started at NASCAR (technically Americrown/ISC) right before 2014 speedweeks. I put in about 60 hours of work the week before the 500 getting everything set up. The week of the 500 (with the rain delay) I worked over 100 hours, then 80 hours the week after getting everything cleaned up and inventoried. Things were so nuts during the rain delay we had 3 of the runners for the concession stands walk off the job.

Just let them all race from Ft. Worth to Martinsville in rental cars and declare a winner there.

Probably so. I'd imagine going back to his dirt roots for a year and tearing it up everywhere gave him a confidence boost. Having more time with his family hopefully helped ground him too. Given Hendrick's resources, I think he's in the best spot to contend for a championship.

I bet Rick doesn't let him run his dirt cars as much as chip did. Too much liability.

He ran a dirt late model last night. Maybe he'll do some of those rather than open-wheel dirt stuff.
