I just had a question about upgrading to 5100s for my 2021 DCLB Offroad. My friend is giving me a great deal on them, but I'm not sure what is already on my truck?

To give you a idea of what your shocks are. Here is a picture of stock trd offroad shocks compared to bilstien 4600s (step below the 5100). The trd offroad comes with some toothpicks for shocks from the factory and really anything is a upgrade.

Thanks for the quick replies guys. My truck has 10k miles...and the 5100s have been on the truck about 4-5mos. I was thinking the main benefit to switching was the 2" lift.

    Thanks again

Lift is actually just a small benefit. The overall ride quality improvement is going to be the best thing you notice.

I recently did 5100’s all around. I’m really shocked (heh) at how good they are for the money. Do it!

Ok...here's another aspect to my 5100s question. My friend is also going to sell me some Toyo Open Country RTs in 295/70r17 tires that are in really good shape. Will these fit on my truck with the 5100s or what else do I need to do to make them fit? They worked on his 2019 Tacoma because he had 6" of lift with Spindles other things

You'll need a similar setup as your friend the 295 are considerably wider compared to stock. More lift, maybe spacers, UCAs, possible trimming and etc.

He had these 33" tires with 6" lift and he's now switching to Icons and 35" tires. The only things he is changing are the tires and shocks. I'm thinking of selling the tires if it requires too many modifications. I'm not a racer or whoops kind of guy. I'm thinking more overlanding/camping...slow and go :)

Are you getting them so you can lift your truck? On road, they ride almost the same.. Maybe the 5100s corner better and lessen brake dive, but who drives a tacoma like a sports car anyways? The stockers are slightly softer on road which I like. Off road, the 5100s do ride better from my experience. They do a great job of soaking up the bumps offroad.

If you want to level out your truck, I think the 5100s are the best bang for buck. They've been amazing to me, bombing fire roads going 40+ and even crawling volcanic rock. would compare to the Foxes I have on my SxS.

If you want to get them just to get them, or you're 80%+ on road with no desire to lift, stick with your stocks. They're slightly more comfortable.

I have 5100’s and really like them. Solved all the wallowy and nose-dive issues of the stock OR shocks and don’t fade on rough roads as readily. I’d say they are a huge upgrade. Nice that the don’t need to be rebuilt, and have a lifetime warranty. Easy to live with. I’m sure the super expensive stuff from Fox and Elka and Icon is all awesome, but the 5100s are a practical upgrade that is a huge improvement to the truck.

I do a bit of off roading and the lift helped. 5100s are rightfully popular.

It is my daily driver and the only trails I've taken it to is Otay Mountain Truck Trail and Bear Valley here in San Diego County.

IMO not worth. Yeah, there are "better" made shocks out there but in the end, only thing that matters is what suits you and since you don't need em offroad, it's your daily driver on the road... Maybe unless you're wanting to flaunt your fancy Fox/ADS coilovers at a car show, you're throwing money away for nothing. You might even get a stiffer ride on the road since there's always a tradeoff.

I went everywhere possible here stock, only lifted cuz I wanted it to look cool. But will say, I have a degree more of confidence with the lift and new tires offroad that wasn't there before. So, maybe a mental benefit can be had there?

Looking at current online pricing I run across this thread from Oct 2021.

    How's the truck look OP?

    Did you go with 295s?

I thought the 4600's were the same as the 5100's. it was just that the 5100's were for a lifted application.
