The rad issue was only for a few years on the very old Frontiers and was fixed after 2010 if I recall correctly.

Not sure what driveline issues you are referring to. The 4.0l and 3.8 have been very reliable along with their transmissions. Suspension problems?

I watched a TFL video today and the new Frontier and Tacoma had the same 0-60 times, the Frontier obviously weighs more and must be more geared for MPG too.

I saw the same video but the problem was that they didn’t run them on the same road. The Tacoma they only ran one direction and you could see it was on a slight downhill. I look forward when they line them up in a drag race.

I haven't seen a new Frontier on the road yet. Next time I'm driving I will probably see one.

I see plenty of old ones, and some new old ones. I probably see a different one every day. Pick uo trucks are popular here.

Might even see a Nissan Hardbody that's still on the road.

Pickups are extremely popular in my area too, but it's Rural with the closest Nissan Dealer a good 50 miles away so l rarely ever come across any Frontier's.

I work across the street from a Nissan dealer and haven’t seen the new one yet.

I drove a new one when looking to downsize from my tundra. Holy crap that steering sucks. It's heavier steering than my tundra with 20 s and 33s

YouTube girl reviewers mentioned it felt a little heavy for them but they liked it after awhile and appreciated the directional stability.

See what I did there?

Ok, Tesla. You cannot tell a grade simply from a video. Tesla used angle to say they were towing "uphill" when pulling the F150 in their drag race.

Go drive one. Way better driving experience. The Tacoma 3.5l and 6 speed just don’t have the torque required for a decent truck motor.

The 3rd gen Tacoma is geared for MPG and has about the same torque as the one it replaced (266 vs 265). The difference is the 3.5L makes it's power up higher since it is direct injected (part time). As many people have pointed out, the 2nd gen will beat the 3rd gen off the line but the 3rd gen will run circles around the 2nd gen at speed.

I've also driven the "torque king" Ford Ranger with the 2.3L Ecoboost and can tell you I wasn't that impressed. It was great off the line but it was jerky, it shifted a lot (10 speed transmission), and it wasn't super smooth.

Moral of the story: the grass isn't always greener.

That being said: I'm not arguing about driving experience vs. the current Frontier since I can't attest to that.

I have experience with both and I’m very experienced with the Tacoma (ex Toyota tech). I’ve pull a 5K TT with both truck and where the Tacoma struggles the Frontier had no issue.

Everyone agrees the 3.5l in the Tacoma was a mistake and are looking forward to the new Tacoma.

Go drive one and see for yourself.

Rumor has it the next Tacoma will follow the same structure as the Tundra and will likely be a turbo 4 cylinder and a hybrid version of the same. Do with that information what you will. You can agree that the 3.5L was a bad idea all you like but it doesn't change the fact that the 3.5L makes 40+ more HP than the 4.0L and only 1 ft/lb less torque.

I can't attest to driving it in person, but the reviews I see also paint the Frontier as a high-revving truck that also "hunts" for gears. This is due to the fact that the transmission has 9 speeds to select from and the engine is direct injected, unlike the Tacoma which has both port and direct injection. Either way, that's just the way engines are headed.

Speaking of which, I don't doubt the Frontier doesn't struggle as much when towing. After all it has best in class horsepower (310) and 16 more ft/lb of torque (281). However, despite these numbers, the max tow rating is still 50 lbs less than the Tacoma (6800 vs 6750).

I'm not sure what the rear gearing is like on the Frontier or the programming so perhaps that is the difference you notice? Or maybe just because it is different. I liked the power train of the Ranger at first but got over it after driving it for longer. But, to each their own.

I think you might have looked up the 4 cylinder spec for the Frontier. The Frontier 4.0l makes 261hp and 281 ft/lbs and the Tacoma 3.5l has 278hp and 265ft/lbs. This is for 2019. It’s the torque that comes on earlier and more of it that gives it the advantage. The new Frontier ups it again to 310hp and the same 281ft/lbs.

I’ve drove the 2022 Frontier. It doesn’t hunt for gears. The shifting so so smooth you can’t even feel them change even when it does.

The specs I mentioned are from the 3.8L V6, not the 4 cylinder.

Saw my first 2021 Frontier in the wild today. Black Pro X version. Gotta admit, it's a good looking truck. The one I saw, the owner apparently bought

    Every.

    Single.

    Option.

That could be added to the exterior. Ugh, I coulda definitely done without all of the extra bling/junk.

The Nissan 3.8l make 310hp and 281ft/lbs of torque. Where are you seeing a 40hp advantage for the Toyota?

    Your comments:
“You can agree that the 3.5L was a bad idea all you like but it doesn't change the fact that the 3.5L makes 40+ more HP than the 4.0L and only 1 ft/lb less torque.”

You were talking about the old 4.0l. The 3.8l has an increase of 32hp and 16ft/lbs over the 3.5l.
