Hello there! I recently bought a 2021 Tacoma SR 4 cylinders. About 10 miles after leaving the dealership the Check Engine Light turned on. I brought the truck back the following day and they "fixed" it in about 20 minutes. That same day the Check Engine Light turned back on. I took the truck back to the dealership again for a second time. They kept it at the dealership over the weekend and I don't when I'll be getting it back. Has anyone experienced this? Any ideas of what's happening? As a matter of low confidence and frustration, I've been reading about the Lemon Law.

In addition to this, I found this dried stain in my garage. I remember the truck leaking water from using the heater but I became concerned because of the white color to it. The leak came from the bottom of the passenger seat. Some where around that area. Isn't the AC filter and components inside the glove box? Any thoughts about the stain?

    Thanks for your help.

You bought a dud / lemon. I’d ask for a new truck off the bat.

That's what I'm thinking but it's under the 2nd fix. The law is protecting them at this moment. That's why they kept it at the shop because they don't want to get to a potential 3rd fix. They'd be out.

Looks like dried coolant. Could be a coolant leak and low coolant throwing the CEL.

Id hold off on the torches and pitch forks for now.

without knowing what the check engine light was for, it's anyone's guess. Find out what the code was and post it up on here, should be mentioned on the paperwork the dealership gave you when you took it in.
A CEL can come on for a loose gas cap or disconnected vacuum line, wonky sensor that just needs to be replaced, etc. Usually it's just something small and they probably just haven't narrowed it down yet. I would not write the truck off for a simple CEL.

As for the leak, that just looks like water to me but again it's anyone's guess as to where that came from without knowing what fluid it is or seeing where the leak on the truck is at.

Ask for management, and keep going higher up and higher up and higher up till they give you a new truck.

I just came back from the dealership because they don't answer their phones. Just wanted a status.

They are saying that the 2nd time that I took the truck in was the same day that I collect it after being fixed the 1st time. To them that means that the 1st ticket hadn't closed at the time that I came back. So technically I'm still in the 1st fix. You imagine? I did tell them to write in the notes of the 1st ticket that I took the truck home that I was told it was fixed.

Did speak to the top guy of the dealership and delegated the responsability to the service manager. He ask them to give me answers. They are still researching the engine light trouble. They said something about a ghost code and contactint someone in the San Antonio factory.

Sorry that happened to you. I bought a 2021 2.7L in Oct and I’m really happy with it. Just sounds like some bad luck. I’d try everything for a new truck.

Your advice gives me confidence, thank you.

I just came back from the dealership. They said that they've been doing many code tests. They mentioned the Mass Air Censor and also ghost censor. They might be doing a hard reboot of the truck. Have you heard about that before?

Mass airflow sensor is a common culprit for a check engine light, but again it depends on what the code is.

Dealerships are known to just replace parts one by one until they fix the issue rather than actually diagnosing the issue and narrowing it down.

If they aren't covering the cost, then I would take it to an independent Toyota mechanic (not the dealer) because a dealership will become very expensive very quickly. Dealers should only be used for warranty covered repairs.

It was brand new with 6 miles. Engine light came on the day I took it home.

They just called to say that they've discovered the issue that couldn't be detected. They said that the problem was the housing of the mass air flow sensor. Supposedly the whole part wasn't made perfectly to fit the truck when installed. Maybe a defect from the maker? They said that they've requested the part and it should be here in a couple of days.

Ah for some reason I thought it was bought used, my bad...then yeah I would let them fix it on their dime, that's what the warranty is for.

99.9% of the time the four cylinders are unbreakable but every once in a while you get what what I call a “Friday truck“ and the guy working on it was ready to go home and may have forgot something or done something on the line
