    Hey guys,

Just bought a 21 SR, and have been driving it for a few weeks now. This is my second 4 banger tacoma, I was driving a 2nd gen 5 spd for awhile.

Just wanted to say, I really don't get all the complaining. I think the truck has more than enough power. I live at 10,000 feet, and the truck has more than enough to drive daily. I see these people saying it's borderline "unsafe" driving at highway speeds, give me a break.

Its a 4 banger. I am not towing anything, I am not driving around with a ton of shit in my bed. If you want to do either of those things, get a 6cyl.

    Done ranting haha

They're definitely not as bad as people make them out to be, that's for sure.
It's definitely no Ram with a hemi, but it's not unreasonably slow.

...I still added a turbo to mine, though :burnrubber:

I have owned a 1998 and now own a 2015 5speed and I have always wondered why they were so despised. My guess is that most have never driven one. And I tow a 6x10 cargo trailer and a Tab 320 Boondocker trailer with it. Mine came with an OEM hitch and 4 pin wiring. I installed a 7 pin connector a brake conroller.

Exactly... I'm not saying everyone should go get one. But I'm 25, single, no kids, don't tow. It does more than what I except out of it, has the new tech, and I know that 4cyl is going to be bulletproof.

Even running 265/70/r17s on it, averaging 21.5 mph at elevations in the mountains. Not bad

My '96 5 lug with the 2.4 and 5 speed was incredible, honestly. I don't think my 3.4l makes that much difference in power, but the significant hit in MPG is noticeable.

The problem is the lack of configurations. The 4 banger 5 speed manual was a joy to drive. The 4 speed auto was a slug, so the last iterations with 6 speed was much improved.

My issue is they are lifted pre-runners and no 4x4 and the mileage isn't really a talking point compared to the v6. So the pro's don't out weight the cons.

My one complaint is the shifting, especially in cruise control. But seems to be a problem on the v6s I've driven as well.

Would be awesome if someday KDMaxx or similar released a 4 banger mod.

I regret getting rid of my 4 cylinder daily. 2010 access cab with 4x4 and the 5 speed stick. Even with heavy tires, I had no real complaints, (even if 5th gear wasn’t an option with a headwind). If I remember right it was even 4.10 gears from the factory.

I was single, no kids, didn’t tow. Pulled the jump seats and built a platform for the dog, and drove that thing EVERYWHERE.

Also great for carrying 1000 lbs in the 6 ft bed of the access cab model. Been there, done that.

That video doesn’t match the claims of good mpg from a lot of people on TW. My 2.7L does better than that, I don’t get down shifting at 60 mph on a flat road in fact I don’t get that at 75 mph until i hit a grade or driving against high winds. I’m sure my 4.30 rear end helps, never understood why they put a 3.91 in the V6 automatic.
When in cruise control I have learned whenever I encounter grades or behind a slower car and want to pass to go to S mode to prevent excessive shifting and unnecessarily high rpms. I don’t mind the high rpms when really needed though this engine hums and that’s where the power is.

I paid $28k for mine, really dont think there is anything else on the market at that price point I'd rather have.

Having my 2nd gen manual was nice, but I swear my '21 automatic has more getup.

Maybe I just suck at driving at stick lol

Apostasy. Only six cylinders can get you from stoplight to stoplight to Target and back.

Considering 2 wheel drive Tacoma SR Access Cab with the utility option/back seat delete. Should I expect better mpg results than 4x4 access cabs and double cabs? No towing, no off road, just bicycle in back bed, stock tires, and traveling 90% of time on roads with speed limit 25 to 50. Was wondering if I will get 20 mpg in city, or drop below since won’t have much highway to average out on daily commute.
