There’s no manual for the new 2021 Tacoma and I do want to get the 4 cylinder. Is 4 banger that slow and bad like people said? I saw couple of them can reach very high miles. Plan to get 2 inch lift and 285 or 33 tires for it after regear anyway. I don’t think I will need speed for off-roading. Not gonna carry a lot of weight nor people nor towing.

You can get a manual in the TRD Sport, Off Road, and Pro.

Agreed. I just converted mine to a manual. Much better now.

If you really want a 4 cylinder MT then you would have to look for a used one as 2017 was the last year.

They are slow. But it’ll get you where you need to go with proven reliability. Much more workspace in the engine compartment as well. I have a 19 4x4 4 cylinder and like it. Auto Trans is goofy but I think that’s with all 3rd gen tacos. I’ve taken mine on 1200 mile trip towing two atvs.

I had a ‘16 2.7 w/ MT and it was fun and reliable and relatively cheap. It got me through some crazy winter driving conditions without skipping a beat.

Then I put on 4Runner wheels and I could literally feel the spunk taken out of it.

That 2017 2.7 will just be broken in by now.

Idk why people say this all the time. The truck is slow as hell but its not really that annoying other than when going uphill. If your buying a 4 banger are you really getting it to throw 33's on it and a bunch of weight?

If you offroad in 4lo, i guess it makes it ok with 33s. Would suck for DD yes.

I bought my 4 cyl auto SR in July and here's my 2 cents:

I use it for daily driving to work. Short trips. Use it to pick up lumber at Home Depot, move a few things now and then. Perfect for my needs. Two seats and I am usually the only one in the truck. My wife and I took a long weekend in the mountains of PA last weekend and I took the truck. Highway driving smooth because of the 'dreaded' stock tires but they are fine for now. Driving up some of those hills I can see why folks say the 4 cylinder is underpowered and yes, I would tend to agree. I don't plan to tow anything and probably won't carry anything heavier than bulk mulch, stone, etc. I think it would be fun to do light off road driving but I honestly don't see me doing that right now. Looking forward to some snow though. My '91 Toyota truck was great in the snow.

I love my truck and bought it for the reasons above and my price point. Good luck!

Apparently that is literal everywhere from here. Every direction I go is uphill from my house.

Not initially, but then you get bit by the bug and suddenly you have 35’s and 800lb of armor.

Yea. 4WD conversion was easier. Still, I’d do it again. Took me about 3 weeks. Installing the pedals and parking brake was probably the hardest part.
