It’s like a different truck. I can actually keep up with traffic now.

After taking a test drive in a 2020 sr 4 cyl manual access cab i wasn't impressed after driving my 2001 tundra. It felt way underpowered for the weight of this vehicle. I kept thinking what did toyota have in mind when they built this truck?

I've always wondered if the auto trans was as reliable as the old a340e. And is it slower? Have yet to drive a 3rd gen 2.7

30%-50% of 4 banger posts are about lack of power.

Buy a used tacoma v6 if money is the issue.

Are you referring to your 1st gen or a 3rd gen?

I can't speak for the 3rd gens, but I had a 2nd gen 4 banger in MT and there is no way I could have dealt with an auto 4 banger. At least the MT gave me some control.

    i had the V6 5speed

didnt need the power ..............the 5speed auto was less complicated

did NOT hunt gears gave no trouble or issues

    i have the I4 auto

top 100mph today I95 north stock empty 1 passemger 4000lbs certified

the auto in lazy mode is more complicated & cn be frustrating

    around town = 4th gear

    intermittent traffic = 4th gear

    moderate hi-way = 5th gear

get on down the road got somewhere to be 6th ( 65-78mph......80 & over = reckless driving citation )

sweet spot on tach most any gear 2300 rpm & more if needed

I took off an air dam once
I drive ~ 70 miles a day for work and 50% of that commute is uphill and i don't have any issues maintaining 75-80 mph the whole way. It takes a little to get up to speed, but it doesn’t bother me much. I’m also on stock tires/wheels, and I only plan on putting some 265s on some sort of aftermarket wheel setup. I4 (Mine’s an AT too) serves my needs plenty, but that need is mainly commuting.

Probably the automatic transmission will not let you spank the 2.7 like it needs to be spanked.

I drove my '14 4 cylinder auto for 6 years. With the 3" lift and bigger tires it was a dog but around town with my foot on the floor most of the time, I got used to it and the 14-15 mpg. It was ok on the freeway too but it struggled and was loud past 70mph. What sucked is when I made a trip up to the Grand Canyon. Going up in the mountains trying to keep it over 60mph sucked. Super reliable though. Only had one issue in 6 years and that was because I didn't take it in for the cat recall until it failed.

i have a 2020 w/ the 2.7L and it's been great. actually has plenty of power if you use more than 50 percent throttle. i don't tow. I use it every day for work hauling stuff in the bed though. no issues keeping up with traffic. i get 24 mpg.

I have not had my 2020 2.7L AT 2WD SR Tacoma for very long, so I can't say anything about long term reliability. I purchased the truck as a replacement vehicle for my wife and I. We bought it to do hardware store runs in and as a means of escape should our home flood again. Is it a speed demon? No. I personally think it drives a little better with some weight in the bed. We loaded the bed with cinder blocks and I felt the truck had better throttle response, but maybe I was putting my foot in it. I did not buy the truck to offroad. I did not buy the truck to modify it and add weight. I am adding all the old man mods though (bug deflector, window vents, and mud flaps (aka japanese air brakes)). I would have loved to have MT, but I was more interested in having the 2.7L. I do not find the auto hunts for gears. I do find it will hold 5th for a long time before shifting to 6th when using cruise control.

Honestly I don't think mines that bad but its slow as shit. I'm sure a manual would do me some good but I like having the auto off road. I've seen some bad stuff happen to manuals off-road when they stall out.

I bet its nice though with the extra gear.
