Do people always register to say this and then just watch their thread grow to 50 pages? I mean what kind of dumbass spends ~40k on a vehicle and doesn't know how it drives before signing? I always think it's a Ford salesman trying to get a sale so he creates the thread then shows it to his customer that is on the fence.

Hm, i dont know. Most toyota/lexus engines are high revving engines. This 3.5L is a lexus engine, do you hear a lot of stories about the lexus engines grenading? I dont, actually hear the opposite. It was designed that way so i wouldnt worry about it.

Of course if you are red lining it all day every day, thats not good. But if you run it a 1 or 2k more rpms than you are used to older/ other vehicles you had, im sure it will be just fine.

All of my vehicles sucked at 5k, they were out of breath. Except for 2 hondas i had, they seemed to enjoy those higher rpms. My civic had 250k miles and it drove like new, i was in my early 20s and i beat the crap of it everyday. Honda also makes an excellent engine and they are one of the most reliable ones. Well except the new 1.6 turbo:)

Or maybe the 99% that don't have a problem? I mean when you create a thread that says your brand new truck performs like previous years you're kinda admitting you're a special kind.

Hmm, mine has driven perfectly since I bought it. I never really got any gear hunting or anything.

My buddy loves his 19 OR AT as well. He had 1st and 2ng gen as well. Told me 3rd gen AT is the smartest of them all.

And to all those that made it the best selling mid size in the country. I agree.

My 19 OR took at least 10/12k miles to settle in. I don't remember exactly when, but at some point I noticed my MPG were finally levelling off after slowly gaining, then a couple of thousand miles later I noticed I was no longer tapping the peddle to get it to shift up more appropriate gear for the situation.

I'll join the list of people who are apparently too misedumecated to judge ECT. I've never noticed a real difference with it, and only when in cruise control. I'm pretty agressive with the gas peddle in general, so maybe that's why. I never carry more a couple of hundred pounds in the bed, and often 0 pounds.

Hmm, I'd sell mine if it didn't drive between 2.5 and 4.5. That's just me though so sorry about your problems.

At this stage I have to belive the Ford ecoboost/10 speed found in the Ranger shifts better than the 3.5/6 speed auto found in the Tacoma. Plus all trims of the Ranger can be had in Cactus Gray, Ford's take on Lunar Rock wich can only be found on the TRD Pro from Toyota.

Not trying to be a dick here at all, but its hard for me to understand why you cant drive your truck between 2.5k-4.5 rpms? My truck flies at 4k, dead serious. I barely have to go over 3k with my normal spirited driving.

    Maybe its 4.30 gearing?

What you describe is exactly how my 2016 TRD sport Automatic was, Toyota offered reflashes, that went along way, and as others describe, with the " learn " process it was much better. But the truck terrified my wife by Lurching when shifted Park to Rev. and sometimes to drive. Loved the truck, hated the auto Trans. I traded it back to the dealer for a 2019 the identical truck with a Manuel Trans . Problem solved, about the same MPG and no shortage of power.

21’ owner myself and I noticed it did have some funky shifting, but now with about 4500 miles on the truck it seems to drive much much better. The only thing I still notice is it seems to go 1-2-3-4-3-4 then 5-6 when accelerating from a stop to freeway speeds. It’s not jerky at all though. The revs just go up then down for a split second then back up then it’s normal again. I have no issues with the truck and the shift points aren’t really any problem for me. Just understand what the trucks going to do and drive it how it’s meant to be driven.

You can get Cement on lower trims and it's way better than LR in my opinion.

Mine was probably "learning" for about 350 miles. That's when I got used to it and it's driven perfectly since then. No hunting, no red line and no two gear downshifting. I've added ovtune, tires, wheels, lift and a front bumper since then and it still drives fine but is probably going to get 4.88's next year if I add sliders.

You probably bought the wrong truck for what your expectations are. I live in the Hill Country in Texas, and do empathize with your complaints, but it was something that I knew going in and as I have become attuned to the way the truck shifts, it has also begun to shift more predictably. Where I do find it annoying is at higher speeds. We have 85mph speed limits on some of our roads here and everyone is driving at 90mph+, the Taco just wasn't meant for that and it struggles mightily and the fuel mileage also tanks. My suggestion would be to either go with a MT, or look at other options, either a Tundra, or another brand of mid sized truck.
