Blue Tacoma has high flow exhaust, throttle body spacer and the usual TRD stuff
Hey all, first post here and I was hoping somebody might have some insight on this.

I have a 2007 Tacoma, which seems to have a lot more power compared to my 2021 Tacoma that I got recently. My '07 Tacoma has a Borla exhaust and throttle body spacer, but otherwise is pretty stock.

Compared to the '07, the '21 Tacoma seems pretty gutless and unresponsive, especially when trying to pass on the highway. Is this an issue of it needing to be broken in? Would a high flow exhaust and a throttle body spacer help with the power and make it more responsive when you put your foot down?

If those won't fix the issue, is there anything that might help the '21?

My 2012 4.0 was better in the lower RPM's. "Torque down low" If I let my 2020 rev then it's a lot happier. And faster than my 2012.
No by much, but seems that way calculated by my Butt Dyno.

Edit: Some may suggest a Tune. But mine has plenty of power for my use.

Don't baby lug the truck and put your foot to the floor. As stated many many times on this forum, this V6 makes more HP at higher RPMs which makes the variable valve timing engine and transmission shifting much better.

    And get a tune.

Are you all having any warranty issues with a tune? I am tempted, but my truck is brand new...

Will depend on the dealer. Some dealerships are more tolerant than others, and some may just default to issues being caused by mods, tune included.

The new Tacoma has a lot more power, it's just higher in the RPM range, paired with horrible transmission logic that wants to keep the truck in higher gears and lower revs. As stated, best thing you can do is get it tuned. It really wakes the engine up and makes a shift way better.

Yup, I went from a 2012 and just got a 2022. No actual data to support this but the 2012 had much more power at low rpms. The 2022 takes getting used to, revving the engine to get the power it has. Once you get used to that, you'll see the engine has more power than the 12.

Plus I have MT so it's easier to rev up. I could see how the automatic would get frustrating because it will want to shift rather than allow the engine to rev to get max HP.

a throttle body spacer should make more power at lower rpms.

Do you have proof, aka dyno sheet, of this part installed on one of these engines making more hp and torque?

no, it's why people add throttle body spacers. more low end torque. i'm not going to go buy a throttle body spacer and dyno it for you.

I should also mention that the biggest thing to get used to is I down shift a lot more now with the 2022 to accelerate at rolling speeds. the 12 could accelerate better because it had more low end power. Not an issue for me, who doesn't love down shifting....

    Is your 2021 a 4cyl? And your 2007 a 6cyl?

I've got MT as well, but even dropping a gear to pass somebody on the highway didn't seem to help much. Maybe I just have to really wind it out, by the sounds of it!

I hear you, I got in the habit of rarely taking my 2012 over 3500rpm. Babied that truck.

This one likes it rough. You really get into the power after 3500 rpm. Give it a shot, rev to 4000+. She will go.

Understand completely, I had in line sixes and V8s, this engine takes some getting familiar with.

Fifth and sixth gears are very close together on the manual, try dropping it to fourth or third and let it eat!

Once you get more familiar with what the truck likes your enjoyment will go way up.

You paid for the entire tachometer -- don't be afraid to use it occasionally.

I have a 2016 man 5 speed 4 cyl Toy Tacoma. I had problems with lack of power and gas mileage compared to my last 2004 Tacoma. The Third Gen Tacoma's came out with high 3's differential gears instead of the 4.10's in my last one. I changed to 4.56 differential gear ratio and woke it up like night & day. More power and better MPG cause I don't have to put my foot to the floor all the time
