    Hey!

I'm new here. I own a 2021 Tacoma, lifted with larger tires, bought new and love it. There's just one thing, rust. When I purchased it, I made sure to put all the protectant offers from the dealership (possible first mistake) on it so I could keep the vehicle as long as possible in as best of condition as possible. This included a rust inhibitor spray and undercoating. I honestly didn't think twice to have checked a before and after. But here I am. I reside in the interior of BC Canada, and I make sure to wash the salt and bugs off as soon as possible.

I may be nitpicking with the amount of rust but I've seen videos and pictures of other Tacomas with protection on them and they don't have as much rust and as far as I'm aware, once rust starts it's downhill from there.

It's 2 years old and is supposed to have the protection on it (should you be able to see the protection?). I don't think I should have rust forming on multiple surfaces. If it's this rusty now, what about down the road a couple years? I thought I'd ask this gang, what are your thoughts?20221028_150855.jpg 20221028_150913.jpg 20221028_150956.jpg 20221028_151024.jpg

Very surface level now… you could/should wire brush it and then apply some protection unless you plan on selling within 2 years

Does not look to me that they put any protection on it at all. Get some Fluid Film or similar and spend some time soaking it.

Fuild film, woolwax, cosmoline, CRC. Look them up and pick one. Do not use a rubber/paint undercoat, it must be wax or oil base or it will make rust worst

Does anyone specialize in cosmoline applications. I just want to pay someone to do it for my 2022. Thanks!

Wire brush... PAINT, and then apply some woolwax everywhere!

That does not look like it had any actual protection (reasonable protectant product) sprayed anywhere.

It’s mostly on the welds which is common
You can do a quick brush and paint
Some kind of protection for sure won’t be a bad idea but don’t worry to much about this
Rust always forms on welds very fast

Anywhere you have snow it’s going to be tough to keep it from rusting. From what I read it’s an annual maintenance to coat the under carriage when preparing for winter. I often drive in snow conditions during the winter months. Never did I get it coated and it doesn’t look like that for me. Then again I live in Southern California, snowboard in mammoth.

The rust itself is not overly concerning, it's very light.

Any and every frame has rust, it's just the nature of it. I wouldn't be overly concerned that it HAS rust, but I would be looking to head off it spreading or more rust developing.

My personal preferences are fluid film or wool wax but cosmoline and CRC are very well regarded as well. You will not go wrong with any of those.

Your truck very much looks like absolutely nothing was done. I could potentially see a spot or two of rust with any treatment but this is unbelievable for having supposedly had rust treatments. Your call but I'm guessing the dealership rust prevention was not cheap, I would be requesting my money back

IMHO Folks get overly concerned by surface rust. In most cases surface rust does not equate to your car/frame rusting out. What you need to be cautious of is water collecting in areas of the frame or body and staying wet for long periods of time. This is where you get severe rust that causes major issues. If you spray the underside of the truck with any rust inhibitor, be sure to get a good quantity in any nooks and crannies of the frame and body. Anywhere where water can collect and hang around.

I aggree. Just curious why rust typically starts at welds and seams? Is this because the factory coatings there are thinner to begin with, or because these areas attract moisture and brine?

The metallurgy of the weld is different than the steel frame.

I’m not as far north as you, but NH is close enough. Lots of snow, lots of salt, plus I’m on the ocean so salt in the air as well.

As others have stated, your frame / underbody looks bone dry. I oil undercoat mine annually and it glistens with an oily sheen. If yours was done by the dealership, you’d see some evidence.

I would definitely look at having your truck undercoated. Either do it yourself or hire it out. Cosmoline, CRC, fluid film, woolwax are all good options. Pick one and make it a habit to have it redone every fall. Figure on $150 +/- to have it done if you hire it out.

Looks good to me. Can someone post a pic of a truck that has been driven a comparable amount in a wet cold environment that doesn’t have corrosion?

I am also in the interior area of BC. Similar amount of rust forming on my 2021 as well. Just finished ordering this product from Amazon after hearing/reading great reviews. Super hard to get off once on and stops existing rust from continuing. Also paints on black

The good news your pics don't look bad for rust for 2 years of use in the snow belt. It takes 8 - 12 years of neglect of your frame for it to be comprised. If your planning on holding onto it I would start a frame maintenance program. I lost my previous vehicle to rust at the 12 year point. This is my program but I'm OCD when comes to rust on my vehicle . I would get a wire wheel and Hand brush to remove rust, Ospho rust neutralizer x2 , Eastwood black Chassis primer x2 , Eastwood black chassis paint x2. ( X2 = 2 coats). Eastwood also makes an interior frame protector get it with the 360 wand for better coverage. I then use Amsoil Heavy duty metal protector x2.

I also use Amsoil to coat the tramission lines going to the cooler , power steering rack lines and the steering knuckles . Rust never sleeps -Neil Young. Winter is coming USN adage ( 7P's ) Proper Prior Planning Prevents Piss Poor Performance. GL

Looks like the dealer didn't really do anything. My 2021 bought December 2020 looks nothing like this. I coated mine with a Cosmoline product and for the most part looks like I drove it off the lot. Since you have a bit of surface rust it's a little late for that treatment, but you can use a lanolin type product no issues.
