Bishop, how hard is the damage to miss? This is exactly the information I was looking for. Does anyone have a picture of a damaged flapper?

Simply you wouldnt catch it unless you filled the truck up.

I've seen it on rentals and trade ins where people want to recoup the fuel before giving up keys. But you need to puncture the flapper first.

My dealer would treat this seriously with the video lol. We all have borescopes and experience to deal with this.

I have not specifically told them to inspect the flapper valve with a borescope. I may try that now. Previously they just went and filled it up, said they didn't notice anything, end of conversation.

That was last done in April, I may give it another shot now that I have more information.

I'll take your cheap US gas haha. Easy to siphon out too!

Thieves no longer siphon as the tanks are all plastic, so they drill. This fits the narrative.

    Only cheap at Costco.

So now that you mention this flapper valve, I'm not seeing it on the diagram I posted previously. Is there another diagram, or am I just missing something obvious?

It's built into the tank the last time I saw this. They are not cheap and usually back ordered.

So here's the trick, warranty has to prove it was vandalism and not a defect, so limit how much you disclose and have them diagnose it.

It could be a stuck flapper, why is just heresay.

Understood. So my understanding is that I will be looking for an obviously punctured or stuck valve? I'll likely do my own inspection first before taking it in.

Indeed calling corporate is a dance. Since you’ve already hit them up that many times it will be a bit harder to move them as they will start to only notate the complaint and not do anything more. Toyota has an option to submit an online form (that is my preference since it’s in writing) At this point you probably need a third party shop to diagnose the issue. That borescope comment is a good thought. After you get it diagnosed you can use that info to have the dealership make the repair. Also probably not in your best interest to say it only happens at Costco.

something definitely seems off and I would be pissed if I were you. That gas is gonna chew up your clear coat!

The valve should be shut and will appear to be bent or stuck open. The camera shouldnt be able to get far in the neck.

Yes unfortunately they'll only take it to their partner stations to test the refueling, which of course never produces the right result. Maybe due to the boot, or something else. I'll be the first to admit their pumps are unusual. But again, there's a problem with the fueling system regardless of it not spitting fuel back out at other station brands.

Seems like this should be the location of that flapper:

I'll see if I can get a borescope down to that tomorrow.

Very well probably it, ever now and then Chev's had this issue. Not just with rentals but largely fleet vehicles. Suggest the anti-siphon flapper but, as stated don't suggest someone caused the issue because issues "caused by people" are not warranty technically. Just defects

That's seriously how it feels. Especially when the attendant is standing next to me.

I read that thread a while ago, but evidently I didn't read it that closely. Rereading it and yes they've said pretty much the same thing we concluded here. Inspecting with a borescope should do the trick, as we've discussed I should be stopped around 18" down the pipe. Assuming the flapper valve is the obvious cause I'll take some pictures and present them to the dealer, with a request that they inspect this issue and fix it. No speculation on what may have caused the issue. For all I know it's been there since the factory.

Forgive the image quality and poor angle. This was the best I could do with the endoscope I have available at the office.

My understanding is that instead of the black void, I should be seeing a white flapper valve, similar to bottom.
