Is this typical? Usually, the newer vehicles prevent this. Explanation please! Thanks.

SR5. It doesn't have the sensors that prevent this.

Are you talking about if the key is in the ignition or just somewhere in the truck? I'm pretty sure my OR won't allow the doors to lock if the key is in the ignition, however if it's just in the cup holder or someplace the doors will lock.

This reminds me that I need to get a non-chipped Hide-A-Key for my Taco. At least then I can unlock the doors if I need to.

Thanks Kev. If I leave the key in the cupholder, say, the doors will lock. I'm surprised Toyota does not include the tech to prevent this. MY Honda Ridgeline has this feature- even my son's 2010 Suzuki. BTW: Another feature missing: A locking gas cap. Can I replace this with a locking one? Thanks everyone for your assistance.

Yes they do. In no way can i lock my keys inside my 2020 sr5. Truck doors will refuse to lock. I've tried it several times already. Even my sr5 2001 tundra was the same way.

I dislike all this tech : Some is useful, some not. But I can\t understand why Toyota didn't incliude a locking gas cap.

I guess its a hit, or miss crap shoot if you get a locking cap that doesn't throw a code before the warranty is up.

Edit: only if they are in the ignition. You can lock the keys in your truck anywhere, except in the ignition.

I know that if I leave my keys in the cup holder, get out of the truck and close the door they do not lock. But, if I grab my other fob I can still lock the doors. 21 TRD OR

You have to lock it in order to get your keys back.

Who'd be dumb enough to put their keys in a cup holder? Its the ignition i mean. Doors will not lock if keys are left in the ignition.

Exactly. Keys go in the ignition when you get in and pocket when you get out. At no point would they ever need to be anywhere else.

Sometimes in a hurry, it happens. Or, if you are washing the interior and the keys are in the cup holder. The point is it happens. Recall the old days. Anyway, a spare stored somewhere externally is the answer. Regarding the locking gas cap: Just one witha key would discourage a gas thief.

i detail and work on my truck, they go in the cup holder all the time.

If I’m detailing I don’t want the keys in my pocket in case they rub the truck

If I’m working on the truck I don’t want they keys, or anything, in my pockets when I down on the floor.

As long as you use the fob to lock the door then you are fine. Still no reason to put them in the truck if you are detailing it. Leave them in the house.
