You can get a locking gas cap at Wal-Mart or any auto parts store.

Why the hell would I bring the keys back to the house when I’m detailing it? I need to move it around in the garage and I’m not walking back to the house just for keys when I can just drop them in the cup holder and there they are for when I need them next.

You are talking about a damn specific scenario where you garage is apparently a mile frombyour house and you need to drive the truck around in that huge garage for some odd reason.

I am talking about the average person getting in and out of their truck maybe outside in the street or at a store. Keys go in your pocket if it is push button or in the damn ignition so you never lock them in the truck.

What is so hard to comprehend?????

The tech doesn’t always work 100% of the time either. The wife’s CX-5 has a smart key and PB start. One day I started it and for some reason I had the key in my hand, then tossed it in the cup holder to go out and brush the snow off. When I tried to open the door to get back in, the doors were locked, with the key in the cup holder and the engine running. The door wouldn’t unlock with the button on the handle even after I got the spare fob from in the house. Had to use the physical key in the fob to unlock. Was lucky I was at home at the time with access to the spare key.

apparently saying there is No reason isn’t overly specific though.
But I guess that in previous comments you said “for most folks” didn’t you.

Still no reason. It is a choice. You have nothing to worry about. You are at your house. Just hope you dont toss them in the cupholder when you are out and about

I choose not to make habits that can screw me down the road.

So after claiming I have a very specific situation that doesn’t represent the “average” you completely ignore your own argument and then claim there is no reason to do so

Congrats, I’m starting to see what you cannot think through each situation individually.

Not sure why you are still going on and on. You WILL lock your keys in your truck or likely have. I wont be.

Good Luck with a Locking gas cap. I bought the Stant 10504 that several other members said works on 2nd & 3rd gen Tacomas and have used successfully. I have not been able to get it to not put up "check gas cap" warnings and check engine lights. I have tried tightening 3-4 clicks and then 6-8 clicks and I still get trouble codes on my 2020 sr5.

Ok skippy, this seems to be too complicated for you so lets break it down using small words.

When I'm at home, when I'm going to be moving the truck a few times, and where I won't need to lock the truck, and where even if I did lock the truck my other keys would be no further then where I would put the keys anyways, then I'll drop them in the cupholder.

But if thinking ahead and evaluating if you will or won't need to lock the truck AT ALL is too difficult for you, then yes, its probably best you build a robust situation where you don't have to mentally evaluate what is going to happen so that you don't get in trouble. I get it, if mentally processing "hmm, might I need to lock my truck here in this situation" is too difficult for you to process then I can see where you have issues, as for the rest of us we can usually figure out if our truck is in our garage or not....

My dad had one. That car was awesome. FYI you could lock the driver door from the inside if you held the door handle in the open position while you locked it.

I can't understand what your stant gas cap issue is, but the dealer where i bought my truck installed one on my 2020 sr5, and its been working fine...in fact i'll be filling my gas tank today. Maybe the dealers get the ones that work, who knows? Truth is i wouldn't look to the big box stores like wally world for those items.

I don't understand myself. I have tried everything reasonable with it I believe. You seen the pics in the other post the box looks genuine but no branding on the cap its self.
I actually looked at Walmart when I was there the other day, they had some brand of caps I never heard of. I can tell you with the problems I had with the supposed to be correct brand one I won't be trying that junk.

you can change the door lock settings on the head unit. i have auto lock turned off because i think it's dumb and have been locked out of my own truck because of it before. i'm constantly in and out of my truck at work and the last thing I need is for it to lock me out.

go to the locksmith or a good hardware store they can make you a plain jane $3 metal key to putin a hideaway box. I have one just incase and not because I'm that goofy.... well I can be but at times having family around when going places they do goofy things and locked my keys in my old Jeep before. Thankfully I had the key under the bumper hiden.
