Wife's Prius V (I burn the gas she saves) is the same way. If you have a key in the car, you generally cannot lock the door. However, if you have one of your keys in the car and the second one outside the car close enough to be read by the proximity sensor, the second one will lock the first one in the car all day long. Stupid system, glad my 15 does not have the button start nonsense. Engineers were so busy figuring out if they could, they didn't stop to think if they should.

I had a Tesla mobile service tech lock himself out of his Model S service car at a service visit to my house. Apparently Tesla's can lock if the key fob is inside. He left the key fob in the car, his cellphone and laptop so everything possible to unlock the car was inside. He had to call Tesla roadside assistance with my cellphone to remotely unlock the car.

I've had this situation happen a few times. I've left my keys in the trunk. You ask how? I'll answer: when my family and I were on a picnic, I put all the contents of my pockets in the trunk, and then I closed it safely. When I needed things, I realized that I couldn't open the car only an hour later. My wife and I laughed about it for a long time. I had to call a locksmith, a good thing there are plenty of them in California, unlike in other states. I recently went to https://www.howtobecomealocksmith.org/locksmith-salary/ and was shocked by the statistics. In general, my car is ready to leave me on the street at any opportunity
