2021 Tacoma TRD Premium package JBL system with sub

Hello-
ok I am ripping out and replacing the JBL sound system. I am seeing mixed options based on what speakers I can and can't use.
Things I have learned from reading threads
1. The head unit does nothing, it puts out zero power.
2. All speakers are powered from amp located at sub rear passenger side seat.
3. All speakers are 2ohm

Speakers people are using to replace JBL speakers
1. OEM Audio Plus - I looked at OEM audio website. They offer the option named speaker upgrade. Click the drop down the only option available is 2020+ (Non-JBL). Are these speakers 2ohm? Are they direct replacement and plug and play. Do they sound good?

2. @TacoManOne - You replaced JBL speakers with real JBL speakers. However are you new JBL speakers 2ohms?

Questions -
What is the easiest speakers to buy that will replace stock speakers and mount in stock location with very little cutting?
Does the new speakers have to be 2ohm?
Can I make the entire system a 4ohm system?
What does the factory amp do? Does it have a built in cross over? If I replace the stock speakers but use the factory amp will have still have poor cross over points making the same sound I hear today?
What is generating the signal in the stock system?
Is the stock sub worth keeping after all other speakers are replaced? Or is the stock sub junk to?

What I am looking for are speakers you guys have used to replace the stock speakers with part numbers (if you have them).

This stock set up is getting viscously ripped out!

I’m on the same mission as you right now. I read another forum post and someone did the kicker upgrade that everyone does on the non-jbl systems and did it on a jbl system. He said it was an improvement. I just ordered the stuff today and will be putting it in next weekend. The sub I used is the Rockford Fosgate 2 ohm it is part number

I am going to try those Subaru tweeters and the kicker speakers. I bought an adapter to take the four prong tweeter plug down to a two wire. I know our jbl is a 2 ohm system and I know the speakers I bought are 4 ohm. It is okay to push less ohms but I risk volume loss, supposedly it will not be too bad. I’m hoping the speakers are such higher quality it will make up for it. I also know there are better ways to do it but my budget was 500, not 3000.

Mine are 3 ohm.

I'm also interested to know what speakers people are using to replace the factory JBL speakers. There are a number of these speaker replacement threads, but they're mostly filled with replies from users who do not have the factory JBL system.

I'm curious to know if anyone has tried the OEM Audio Plus speakers with their factory JBL system. OEM Audio Plus doesn't appear to advertise a speaker-only replacement... It looks like they only want to sell you their $2,700-$3,000 full JBL replacement option.

 

I did a pioneer head unit with a maestro interface, alpine separates up front, a sub box in the right rear and audio control acm mini amps 1- 4 channel 55x4 and 300 x1 for the bass. It really sounds nice and crystal clear. The new radio smokes the factory one in every way. I didn’t want to get involved with dsp,s and fixing a not so great signal. The pioneer radio has a nice clean signal that goes to the amps and = great sound out

 

@TruckGuy63 - The system you designed is exactly what I am looking for. Please provide the pioneer head unit model number, the model number for the maestro interface and alpine speakers.
Also what is dsp's? I am guessing you took out the factory amp and replaced it with audio control amps. Did you lose any functionality from the steering wheel controls?

 

I did upgrades to the stock JBL system.

$70-

$62 JBL GX328 3-1/2" Coaxial Car Audio Loudspeakers

JBL GX328 3.5" dash speakers - there is a thread with instructions, 2.3ohm


$170 - Infinity kappa 90csx 6x9 - front doors (used on eBay)

$50 - JBL GX628 6.5", rear doors (used on eBay)

$200 - Rockford fosgate p3sd2 8" subwoofer

Maybe $150 for the installation bits and sound deadening material.

It was around $650 to do all of those upgrades, the speakers are all 2-2.3ohm

Using stock amp and sub enclosure but maybe I'll change that someday.

The upgrades made a huge difference in audio and it all sounds way louder and clearer l and bassier.

The biggest disappointment in the whole thing is the subwoofer, I think the enclosure and stock amp just isn't giving the Rockford fosgate what it needs. It's better than stock though.

Overall I'm extremely happy with the upgrades, but I'm not a crazy audiophile.

 

Ecellent information here - thank you very much coming from a JBL equipped Taco owner. I'm going to start on the dash tweeters first and the front doors as I heard the rear speakers barely have output and act as "filler sound".

 

I did a pioneer Avic 8600 but any of the pioneer units will work good. I wanted to keep the navigation with out use of my phone, and I have tons of older CD’s I wanted to keep( 2019 Tacoma had a CD player).
So here it is
Pioneer AVIC 8600NEX
Maestro
Sirius radio module
Audio control ACM4.300
Audio control ACM1.300
Audio control cover plate to join both amps together
Alpine Type R separates 6x9 for the front
Alpine S Series 6-1/2 for the rear doors
2 ohm sub in a box in the rear passenger side wall ( I did the JL stealth box )
Wiring I used stinger speed wire and the factory wiring.
The only thing you really loose is the turn by turn directions on the center display behind the steering wheel

It’s very clean ,clear and has nice bump I am very happy with it. It really is a game changer on how it sounds

Are these the separates you used in the front? If yes how did you run the wires for the cross overs and mount the tweeters in the dash?

Yes these are the same . I mounted the tweeters in the stock location by taking the factory tweeter out and putting it on a piece of abs plastic and tracing the outline . Once I had the outline I drilled two mounting holes and cut the hole for the tweeter itself and popped it in place .the crossovers once I set them up I put them in the kick panels, they are very small.
The only thing you will need is an adapter to plug the tweeters in. I will send you a link once I remember what it was . What’s nice about those speakers is they produce very nice lows and I was able to set the high pass cross over to 80 hertz and they handle well. The rear door speakers I have at 100 hertz .
I just remembered the speaker adapter were I think redwolf but I will double check
They make an adapter for the tweeter plug so you don’t need to cut anything
The stealth box is actually wired for 2 ohm

 

The other thing to overcome is the sub
If you do the jL like I did you need a new rear panel on the passenger side / used is probably best
Or you could put a new speaker in the JBL box

You could put a new speaker in the jbl box there are a few that fit this will be less expensive .
If you want the stealth box then yes you need to replace the panel with a non jbl truck panel
You can look it up on jl audios web site . Either way you go you don’t harm the jBL stuff if you sell the truck

What do you mean by this statement?

Where did you mount your amps? How did you run your wires for the front speakers?

 

Amps are under the front driver seat , but I don’t have a power seat. Now I think in your case I would put them in one of the compartment under the rear seats do on the driver side back wall in that smaller cubby. I think if I had to do it over I might do that also . The speaker wires I went to the stock wires with the stinger speed wire , another benefit of putting the amps in the back all the speaker wires are by the amp. The other option is to run all new speaker wires
