I have a 2021 MT trd offroad and my backup camera is now stuck on all the time. It happened when i was just cruising in 5th gear. My reverse lights arent on and I’ve shut off the truck multiple times but it wont stop. Any tips?

Probably going to have to pull the head unit, and check the wire looms from there, lots of metal.bits the wires can rub or get pinched on, but chance are, the wire that supplies power to camera got exposed somewhere and it is now getting power from somewhere else.

Also was going to check the reverse switch on the tranny. Was going to disconnect it and clean the leads but it looks like this instead of others that you can disconnect

I don’t think it’s the cable attached to transmission. U mentioned u have a aftermarket radio . I’m guessing it has something to do with the radio itself .

Just want to add that I have a kenwood in a mt taco, and I believe that the camera is just on all the time while the truck is turned on. It's not that it's turning on and off based on reverse or not, I think it's just whether the display is showing you the feed or not. I know that with my kenwood I can choose a view on my unit that brings up the camera all the time, it's a feature actually (for towing and the like). I think you probably just inadvertently hit some "show reverse camera" button/view as the current/default view on your head unit. Nothing likely wrong with the truck.

Yep, this is correct. The Maestro that most use to adapt the radio provides power 24/7 (with ignition) to the backup camera, instead of like stock where the radio only turns the camera on for instances when using reverse. OP probably hit the button to view the camera by accident or something. It is indeed a feature for anytime camera access.

Yea I saw that feature on my headunit but whenever I did use it I just clicked the home button and it would return to the normal screen. Now its just stuck on the camera no matter what I do. I ordered this whole kit from trailgridpro and they had me try a couple things that didnt work so theyre sending a new harness and Maestro to see if it is the headunit or something with the truck.

Could be the head unit or the Maestro, unlikely to be the harness if it's been working up until now. The Maestro would more likely be the problem if the truck was an automatic, because the Maestro looks for a reverse signal over CANBUS and uses that to tell the head unit when to switch to the camera (during reverse). Since the manuals just have the backup switch, it should just be a wire in the radio harness going straight from there to plug that plugs into the dash.

The adapter harness wiring between the Maestro and head unit is the same whether trucks are auto or manual, so I suppose the Maestro could technically fail and be telling the head unit to show reverse when it isn't supposed to, even on a manual.

I didn't get mine in a kit from Trail Grid Pro, but when I did it, the harness I bought for 2018+ Toyotas that adapts the Maestro and radio didn't even have a reverse wire, since most Toyotas are automatic and use the CANBUS signal. So I actually had to find an unused wire, move the pin to the cavity that corresponds to reverse on the truck, and then spliced that to the reverse wire on the head unit. I want to say the radio reverse wire was also spliced to the Maestro (probably for automatics), and I want to say I snipped that because I have no reason to have those two talking in reverse. But it's been a while and I may be wrong, although I have no idea how else the Maestro would be able to control the radio in reverse after receiving the CAN signal.

Just got the new maestro and the backup camera is still on 24/7 without letting me do anything on the headunit. Trailgridpro is sending me a new headunit. If that doesnt work does anybody have any suggestions? Could i just permanently remove the backup camera from the truck?

If possible, try put back the original OEM unit to your Tacoma, and see if still get issues. If you still have it, and never upgraded anything else. I not familiar with Sony XAV9500es.

I'd still bet $ it's a setting in your head unit. Without being there to help you hands on, have you tried factory resetting your aftermarket head unit?

Did you try doing any kind of hardware parking brake bypass to get video in motion? Perhaps you tapped into reverse wire on accident?

    Latest firmware?

Did you double check your connections? Page 14-15 https://www.sony.com/electronics/su...95f5b9b5fc3b137d1916ea84d85a1eb/50219031M.pdf

Maybe double check what you have your "REVERSE IN" wire connected to? Perhaps it's getting 12v all the time, instead of switched when in reverse.

I cant even get into the headunit settings. Right as i turn on the truck the headunit goes to the backup camera. The home button doesnt work. The volume and skip buttons work though.

I added a comment above. Maybe try disconnecting (temporarily) the reverse in wire from the head unit, just to get it to shut off the camera.

EDIT: should be the purple/white wire.

i tried that with the trailgridpro support. They had me cut all the wires for the camera going to the headunit but the camera was still displayed. I didn't have to splice the camera wire into any of the trucks original wiring. It was all plug n play and working for a month up until a week ago.

I ask again. Where is the original OEM head unit that came with your Tacoma? If you don't have for some reason, I don't know.
