Not sure just going what dealer told me.they ordered a RR wheel bearing assembly / and 2 washer conical springs/1 rear axle retainer. They may be also using parts from their inventory also..I have no idea what these parts are for but will find out more when work is done on April 10 th.They said it may take 3 to 4 hours.

Yup just got my truck back yesterday after 7 hrs. At the Toyota dealer . They did replace both rear wheel bearings at 17000 km.So disappointed! Again never been off road or even down a gravel road.Could these been faulty bearings from the factory?I hope this issue isn't a reoccurring one

I already lined this out. The bearings themselves don't leak. There is only grease in them from factory, and the diff oil is kept away from them. There are axle shaft seals that are hammered into the ends of the axle housing tubes. The seals seal to a pressed on circular retainer on the axle shaft, which holds the wheel bearing onto the axle shaft. The oil does not go beyond this point, meaning it doesn't touch the wheel bearings at all. Therefore, the bearings can not "leak."

The only way the wheel bearings could "leak" is if the seals leaked first, and let diff oil into somewhere it isn't supposed to be. These bearings are types that diff oil getting into them will wash out the grease out of the ball bearings and ruin them.

Without you giving us more info about what the dealer actually found, we can't really tell you anything. The skinny is this:

    • The bearings do not go bad often.
    • For the dealer to see any sort of leaks, the seals were leaking and needed to be replaced.
    • For BOTH to be leaking, you probably have a pressure problem maybe caused by a faulty breather.
    • Needing to replace the bearings would be because diff oil got into them and washed out the grease, essentially ruining them.
Bottom line, very few people have rear wheel bearing issues. In order to understand your issue and why both were bad, we really need more info. And there is a chance that both weren't bad, or that maybe a clogged breather caused all this to begin with.

I have a 2021 SR5 RWD. City and highway driving. This truck has an easy life. At 47,000 miles the left rear wheel bearing developed a thrum thrum noise at about 25 to 30 mph and eventually a consistent and louder noise. The dealer replaced that bearing under warranty. Now At 52,000 miles the right wheel bearing developed the same noise and is in process to be replaced under warranty. The dealer’s tech doesn’t seem to have any idea what’s causing this or at least isn’t saying anything. Bearings should last for life a vehicle. Something is not right.
