It's all opinions, they are both better than stock. I started with kdmax and now i roll with OTT manual tune which i drive 800+ miles a week, it's a lot smoother throughout the power band. I don't have 500 posts but i'll show my receipt for both lol

Highly recommend KDMAX Pro v9 as the latest release is a great update for anyone but as stated any current tune is going to be solid, just make sure you get the latest and great service with it!

I have (34) customers who own 2022-2023 running KDMAX Pro now....great outcomes and happy owners all around!

I have the VF tuning cable bought with Pro v9 which currently sits in a folder, I'm good. If any of those 34 want to ride in my truck i'll gladly let them take it for a spin so we can eliminate bias. That's how i switched.

That's cool, all from someone or VFTuner then the tune pack elsewhere?

Bought from a KDMAX tuner originally here in SOCAL. Then i drove an OTT manual truck and made the switch buying the OTT pack and loading it myself.

Oh you have an MT unlike the OP. The 34 owners I've worked with are also automatics like his so that's why I was commenting. Comparing MT to AT isn't really helpful but a large base of customers on the same tranny is where I'd put my investment in.

Feel free to DM me what you feel the MT tune is missing since it's off-topic here, we are always asking for owner feedback and will consider making adjustments to improve an owners experience, ya just need to speak up. No one should have to keep buying tune packs.

I just had my Tacoma tuned with OTT; wow! That’s the best money I’ve spent on my truck by far. Anyone who’s in South Carolina and has a Tacoma should contact Jay Anderson of Lowcountry Tuning (912-266-1488, jay@lowcountrytuning.com)
I was stuck at work and he came by and did the tune in the parking lot. My manual Tacoma drives so much better now.

Not sure but I can ask him.
He said OTT hasn’t changed in a year.

The same 9.0 that was released late 2022.

Thanks Justin. Every time I see a review it's never stated what version OTT is so knowing it was 9.0 last year and that it's still 9.0 now certainly fills in the blank.

I don't understand why the "versions" of these tunes are being changed so often. Not so sure there is a lot of change in the 3rd gen trucks from year-to-year.

Would one of the tuners give a topline overview of the "why" for updating these tune versions so frequently?

I think these are factors all to some extent but I would not call a release a year "so often"
    • In 3-years KDMAX Pro has had 3 major releases, is that frequent? I expect OTT is close in revs because they had less time and wanted to catch up...makes no mistake its also a great tune but in much less time they have 'equal' versions.
    • You can imagine with KDMAX Pros popularity of thousands of trucks tuned that the owner feedback has driven further improvements. If something can be made better then it's made better - good for all.
    • The VFTuner platform has had improvements and further access to tables over that time. That gives the tuning resource more to work form and tweak to make a better product.
    • Competition drives improvements - also good for all

OTT FTW (at least in my case). :101010: Six plus months and it's better than ever. Best money spent by far.

Good question. Simple and honest questions, sometimes don't have a simple answer.. I'll speak to OTT's development as I have zero knowledge or background in how others derived their offerings in hopes to clear up any misconceptions.

OTT's beginnings were the work of John Gobbles (@Boltripper) who owns Overland Tailor Tuning, and initially came to be as a means to get a 3G Tacoma calibration built to improve the 2GR-FKS's low-end torque output as well as improve other areas of the calibration John felt were missing from the calibrations on the market at the time.

The initial versions were, in essence, private releases only available to select individuals. The initial takes at a tune took some trial and error to achieve what we were after, taking user feedback, analyzing the data, and using this information in quantitative and qualitative form to drive the development of early versions. The strategy was always to address one issue/area of improvement at a time, not try to reinvent the calibration with each release. So for OTT, it stood to reason there were going to be a few revisions to get this thing to do what we wanted it to do.

Keeping things (intentionally) short, the tunes available to the public in mass from OTT have been limited to essentially 4 versions. Versions 1-5 as mentioned above were functionally private releases not available to the masses. Version 6 is when we started to make some headway with a product that was market ready. Version 7/8 had major updates to the TCU tuning among other tweaks. Version 9 was a fairly large revision to the engine calibration based on our extensive dyno testing.

While I can say there are no major updates planned for the 3G 3.5L N/A calibrations we do have something VERY big on the horizon for this platform :)
