Long story short I'm back in the market for a new Tacoma. The new Bronco had me very interested but Ford, as probably expected, has absolutely botched it. I'm a day 1 reservation holder and I got an email on Friday telling me my Bronco won't be available until 2023....

With the recent announcement of the 2022 Trail edition and new color for the TRD Pro it's safe to say that I'm all in on a 2022 Tacoma now. I've signed up on the website to get more info but I'm wondering if anyone here is an insider or knows more.

Essentially - when will 2022 pricing and info come out and when will I be able to order and around what timeframe do they start building 2022's and how long will delivery take?

usually around end of September early October you start seeing the new models show up, although the shortages may affect that.

Who could know that? Probably early fall as always, but with everything else in the car biz struggling to find some “normal” it may be delayed.

why do you say Ford botched it?

Are we going under the assumption that Chine will or won't have invaded Taiwan by then? I'm going to assume they have. In that case, you may never get a 2022 Tacoma. Outside of that I think you'll just have to wait and see, given how uncertain availability has been in certain parts of the country. Also, who knows what pricing impact there could be.

Could take as long as 2023 to see a 2022 Toyota truck. There might never be a 2022 Tacoma. Ford dealers are still waiting for 2021 Rangers that had been ordered in February of this year.

Pretty much anyone who has ordered a Tacoma or followed Toyota or car manufacturers in general in the past might know when they start tooling up for the 2022 MY and how long the whole process has taken in the past.

Ford went from promising a 2021 Bronco when I ordered mine just under a year ago to now telling me I have to wait until 2023. And, in the meantime, they'll be building dealer stock before finishing their 2-year backlog of reservation holders that converted to orders. So any Joe Blow with enough money who isn't picky about the Bronco they want can walk into a dealer in a couple months and drive out with a Bronco. It'll be a 4 door soft top without LUX or Sasquatch but they'll have one.

They've been horrible about communication throughout the whole process, I had a dealer steal my reservation and place an order without my consent and, well, it's a Ford lol. I've seen the new Bronco more than about 75% of people who have one ordered and there's just no way I can justify spending $60k on a Ford as I have my Bronco built out. I'd rather a loaded TRDOR for $45k and $10-15k to build it into what I want. It'll be more reliable, have better resale value and I won't be losing the versatility of a truck like I would with the 2DR Bronco.

FWIW I know there are shortages and all that, I'm asking what's been the 'normal' in the past. I know I'm custom ordering my Tacoma the day 2022 order banks open and I'm willing to wait for it.

I get it, but are you willing to order and wait if this disheveled market doesn’t go back to business as usual anytime soon? 2022 is still off on the horizon and demand will still probably lag behind supply.

To use your Ford example, why not just wait and find dealer stock when the time’s right? The Bronco was kneecapped twice - launching an all-new model with all new factory tooling into a global supply chain and labor market that basically just stopped for a few months. Frustrating situation, but they seem to be doing the best they can under the circumstances. And while the dealer stock thing feels like a sucker punch to those who ordered, there are many contractual obligations behind that move. Doesn’t make it easier to I accept, but there are reasons for it.

the 22 taco though will probably be, relatively speaking, easier to come by. It ain’t new and it certainly ain’t rare. Just be patient…you’ll probably be fine around late October or November.

I can almost guarantee that a dealer will not get the model/trim/color/options I want. I have a standing search for what I want in any 3rd gen and I've seen 1 pop up for sale all year.

When you say Oct/Nov - do you mean 2021 or 2022? Either way I'm fine and I'm way more comfortable waiting on a Tacoma than a Bronco honestly.

And I hear what you're saying about Ford but part of the problem is that my order is for a 2DR. And they are not offering a soft top for a 2DR at all. All hardtops are constrained (along with literally every option I have - Lux, Sasquatch, Mod top, 2.7TT engine, bash bar, winch, etc). So the email saying that the build I want won't be until 2023 was killer. I've moved to CO from OK and I simply can't wait that long to get a 4WD vehicle to replace my RWD Tacoma. I can make it this winter as my job will still be remote and I won't need to travel but I'll need someting by next winter.

Where are you located? Regional demand is a factor.

What exactly do you want? You should be able to get whatever you want by Halloween.

    Denver, Colorado.

If I can order it and have it by Halloween I'd be over the moon happy. Even if I can order it then and have it by Valentines Day 2022 I'm thrilled.

What color, trim level and options do you want? There are a shit ton of choices between the Trail and Pro trims which includes the Off Road trim.

What you want may be available right this second unless you want metallic piss yellow. :D

Well, that's part of the reason I want 2022 pricing info. What I want boils down to where the Trail trim gets priced.

I think in the end I'll wind up with an Army Green TRD Off-Road DCLB 3.5L Auto. Fully loaded with infotainment options - carplay, heated seats, etc. Might spring for the TRD lift and I'd love if my dealer will order the Trail wheels/grille and swap me and add on the trail boxes. Why not just get the trail? I want the OR off roading features that the trail is lacking and I'm suspicious that the Trail won't come in 6' bed.

I rarely see DCLB and even more rarely see anything in Army Green. I'm not sure I've seen a green DCLB in person honestly. And I certainly haven't seen any used/new ones for sale, locally or otherwise.

Dude you are talking apples and oranges with these two vehicles. How can you even think they are competitors?

Go ahead and show me where I said they were competitors. People can be interested in two different vehicle types. I was always going to give up a few things I wanted if I went with the Bronco and I'd be gaining serious off road capability. Turns out I don't really want or need that, especially at the price it came out to. And I'd rather have the truck bed that I'd be losing with the Bronco.

Also, there were shortcomings on the new Tacomas that kept me from just getting a replacement Tacoma. The 3.5 and 6sp auto are pretty universally panned. However, the new stock tune or an aftermarket tune fixes that up nicely. I also didn't love the price at the time but now seeing how it compares to other options that I want the price doesn't bother me as much.

    A few.
One poster on here stated he ordered a 2022. Maybe contact a local dealer in your area and see what they say.

I will give you this... they both have four wheels and can haul people. Other than that, they are not comparable. Sounds to me like you don't know what you want.

Tow ratings are nowhere near close. One has an open bed, the other does not. Wheelbase is incomparable. off road prowness? Incomparable, especially when you can buy one with 35's and front and rear locker and and and.

I went through something similar when I bought my 2018 Ford Transit.

Custom order, I knew exactly what options I wanted, but all the local dealers kept blowing me off. All high roofs, extended lengths were on allocation. Not enough rail transport carriers. So dealers were told for every 19, you get one special order. Meanwhile, plumbers were like, "I want a high roof, extended and paying $5K over MSRP.

I ended up buying from a dealer in Buckner, MO. Seven miles from the plant. Good guys to deal with. I remember when I flew into MCI with my son, Dealership had a person pick us up and told my son Welcome to the largest Ford Transit dealer in the USA". Smallest car lot he had ever seen. Matt Ford, great to deal with.

It was close enough, no shipping issues, and they would take a small margin ($1000 deposit) and give a great deal to get you to fly in. 3.5L twin-turbo, same mileage as my Tacoma but 4000-pound load capacity. The irony, we planned to downsize to a smaller home, so I sold it. Covid happened, and we are still in the same house (the shop has 12' x 12' roll-up doors).

I am going to compare the taste of fish to the taste of beef - both fill you up and offer protein.
I am going to buy a hat... or a raincoat - both keep you dry
I am going to buy a Bronco... or a Tacoma - both can be built or bought into great overlanding/off roading machines.

Not sure what part of "people don't always cross-shop competition" you don't understand. I do know what I want - and wants and needs change over time, especially when you move to a completely different state where 4WD is basically required for winter travel.

And FWIW there are a lot of current Tacoma owners over on the Bronco forum that have one reserved....and plenty of people who left the Bronco and wound up with a Tacoma. So say what you want but I'm not the only one.

Sounds a lot like what's going on with the Bronco and the dealer I found in the middle of nowhere Iowa. Granger Ford. Safe to say they have the highest allocation numbers of any Ford dealer in the US. Likely by 4x and I'm not even talking about per capita.
