I finally got bigger tires 2020 Long Travel Tacoma 1997 MAGNUM
I have no winch or lockers. Maybe I should invest in some before I do any more difficult trails

Or I just make it interesting without lockers and winch

    Just 3 tons of fun!!!

For real, Deer Valley is one of those threshold trails. If you want to get more advanced than that type of trail, it's really in your best interest to start looking in to winch, THEN lockers. If you are looking to ever go bigger than 33s, it's also good to look in to re-gear at the same point as you do the lockers.

That being said, just pair up with another rig, or a few other rigs, that have a winch, and you could do a lot of the trails anyway. Myself... I don't wheel really any trail without at least another rig with me. I'd probably do Niagara Rim alone, because I know it so well, but I certainly wont do an unknown trail without another rig with me. And I'd like to think I'm relatively well built and well prepared.

Any number of things can go wrong when you're out there. It's not even just about how well built your rig is.

Sometimes my wife and I like to just get out, alone. But that's when we pretty much keep it to the relatively tame roads.

    The usual
No locker makes rock crawling hard as you are going to lift wheels. ATRAC kinda helps, but requires some skinny pedal. More wheel travel helps too. I'm assuming down hill also gives you gravity.

Trails I did with sliders and 33s:
    Corral Hollow
    Signal Peak
    Sourgrass
Forestdale Rd (it's how you get to Deer Valley)

Both Signal Peak and Sourgrass have parts that would be considered hard, but can be avoided.

One thing I've learned is that you always hope for no damage, but don't assume it, you can total your car on the way to the trail by hitting a deer. If you break things, you upgrade them with something better.

I would recommend running dear valley from 4 to 88. Just because it would be a real drag to make it all the way to the last little bit before 4 and turning around before the gate keeper and having to go all the way back… although going down that section is much easier.

Here is the one picture I took last year…

Well one more non wheeling pic at the end. We went in from four to the first creek crossing and back.

I'm actually working on our Deer Valley vid from a few weeks ago, right now.

I'm WAY behind now, I just dumped a metric shit ton of video from Swamp Lake (this past weekend) on to my laptop, and now that's in the que too.

Deer Valley was a SLOG for us, so I'm not sure how much, or how good the video is. I know it definately shows the Gate Keeper (at the 4 end) pretty well.

I'll post it as soon as I get it done... and it uploads... which could be tomorrow.

Thinking about camping along the side of the road in Big Sur? Might want to rethink that. Fines went from $200 to $1000 plus fees for camping on the side of the road.

Did you pass that rock garden area? With the bypass? It’s on the climb up out of HWY4.

I didn't see a bypass anywhere on Deer Valley.

Maybe I’m mixing it up with another trail.

Super steep with a lot of rocks and the trail made an s turn in it. Maybe I’m thinking of the Dusy. Similar rocks and trees and such.
