I was at eagles lake Saturday for a night run. First time for me also. Definitely want to go back in the day time. Sliders did there job. A buddy ripped his ABS sensor and pinched a brake line. Other than that it was pretty fun. Only picture I got

    Just 3 tons of fun!!!

No worries. We're happy to make them. I'm super freaking new to the whole thing, so I hope the videos are progressively getting better as we go.

We are getting better equipment, we have a drone (that I don't know how to use, so I'm afraid to fly it lol). We just got a Go Pro 8, that will start being used as our main cam (we've shot everything so far on just our Galaxy S21s). And we have another (cheaper) action cam that will probably be mounted under the truck. Hopefully adding fresh content and perspective.

    "Thank's for watchin"

Some advice I might give is to not make the videos like 6 different parts.
Personally I wouldn't wanna break up a video into more than 2-3 parts if you want to retain your audience.
Gotta draw in your audience with key moments and action and then kinda sprinkle them throughout to keep them interested.
It always surprises me the viewer retention statistics on a youtube video.
mfers have hella short attention spans

LOL... A 5 day trip isn't going to fit in 15 minutes.

I know what you're saying, about the attention spans. I can see it in the analytics. But, I'm not just making vids to appeal to tweakers with ADD. I've gotten it down to where we'll basically be posting a video that covers a day of the trip and keep that down to around 15 to 17 minutes. Some days, like the last day of Dusy have a bit too much content to fit in one video. But I have even started going back looking to tailor down some of the old vids, like Slick Rock/Deer Valley. That trip video set is going to get cut down to a lot less.

If people don't like the videos, they can watch the 15 to 60 second shorts... otherwise, it is what it is, really.

The channel is averaging 16,000 views over a rolling 28 day period, and has been for a month. I don't think that's too terrible for a Channel that has only, really, been creating for less than 6 months. The watch time precentage isn't really where I want it to be, but overall we have 800 hours of watch time on the Channel in less than 6 months as well.

There is, however A LOT of room for improvement. As we get more comfortable filming, develop an eye for what is more interesting, and most importantly, as I get better at editing... it will continue to evolve. And any advice is surely appreciated (sincerely)

The funniest thing is... The two different bits of advice we get ALL THE TIME... mostly, actually, from the same people.

    SHORTEN the videos
ADD more footage of us in front of the camera, interviews, etc

Definitely. Do it however you wanna do it. Everyone has their preferences. And there will always be people that prefer things on the opposite sides of the spectrum.
It'll evolve as you do it more.

I think there is a good amount of clips that could be shortened up just a touch. 10-30 seconds here and there and that would help with that overall time. I’m sure things like that will come with more experience.

It will definitely evolve for sure. I can go back and see a bunch of stuff I would change in every video. It'll look good when I finish, and the first time I watch it through, but then I'll be like, I could have cut that, I let that run a little long, etc.

But then, on the next vid, I remember some of this and that and make improvements.

But some back ground on us... I'm not a photographer. Up till now, I would always just get caught up in what was going on and do it. I never even thought to film or take many pictures... same for my co-pilot (Jen). SO it's been a learning curve just to get content. Then on top of that, I've never even tried to edit anything till recently, so that is ALSO a complete learning curve.

But as far as the videos go, I'm trying to get to a place where we are creating videos that WE want to see. That's not going to change. What WE want to see is an interesting video, that puts the viewer there in the seat, and on the trail with us. A video that gives a good perspective of the trail for someone who has never been on the trail. A video about the trail, the trip, the comradery of the group, etc.

I'm not ever going to be the... "Hi, thanks for watching, do me a favor, before I even get stared with the video, *Like and Subscribe*. *It helps the channel* We've got a bunch of shit we want to buy and we really need your help to get monetized. Speaking of buying shit, here have a look at these hair products some random company wants us to tell you about... oh and by the way here's 2 and a half minutes of footage of our week long trip to Anza Borrego, Thanks for watching"

You're right -- you can't please everyone. There's a group of Australian guys with a channel called 4wd 24/7 and they make hour long videos that I really enjoy. When I'm working in the garage it's nice to have something playing that doesn't require me getting up and picking a new video every ten minutes.

    1000% AGREE with you.

I know it's there. I'm just learning how to get it there, without it being super choppy, so it looks good. Also, the better I get at editing, the faster I'll be able to do it, without saying fuck it, it's good enough

I'm super impatient with shit like the editing etc.

You've got the right idea. That's the primary reason I like making videos. For my own viewing pleasure. It's great to go back and watch through them when you wanna reminisce on a trip. Sometimes feels like you're being a burden though when you're getting out all the time to film shit. I hate being that guy, but it's always worth it in the end when it's all said and done and you have something fun to watch that captures the experience.

I'm more of a music guy when I'm working on stuff, but that's a good use for their videos. I don't often find enough time to sit down and watch a whole one of their videos all the way through.

One trick I use with clients videos is to not cut video and audio at the same time. For example, if I have a longer clip of someone talking I'll insert shorter relevant clips with no audio to break up the longer shot and keep it entertaining.

That reminds me that I forgot to post a photo. Still can't believe that this loose boulder kicked up enough for me to get high-centered on it, much less that I needed both lockers to get off it.
