I think you can still buy them. When I cleaned out my mom's place me and my aunt found some that were maybe five years old.... when she last owned a car. I assume you can get them at Walmart or a book store like BAM.

Man 2011 was the first time in my life I was actually able to own a fridge that made ice for me. I still make my own big ices for adult drinks.

All this talk makes me think of the series Revolution where all the electric and electronics around the world stopped working.
Back to horse and buggies and steam trains again. Lots of people wouldn't be able to make it.

    I still don't have one...

But I did buy myself a cooler-thingy that makes 2-inch clear cube ice for adult drinks. It is a pretty cool thingy... and looks cool in my rocks glasses.

Yeah well I most likely wouldn't have got that fancy fridge if it wasn't a floor model on markdown. I would have been still making all my ice too if not for finding a bargain.

I haven't gotten too far from growing up poor white trash despite working at all these years.

The big 2inch ice cube is awesome

No shame in that. I didn't need the latest and greatest to impress anybody. And the fact that I didn't chase after every tom, dick, and harry means that I am much closer to a comfortable retirement than many of my contemporaries.

    Yes it is....

I still have Hagstrom atlases & tons of paper maps, including some from Esso.
My Taco doesn't have GPS, my 3 previous rides did & I never used it. I prefer my proven tried & true method of mapping out my route in advance & writing down the directions. Works for this old coot.

I (via dad) still have some maps for the New York / Northeast area that do not show the western spur of the NJTP, which actually ended at US46 instead of I-80; that show all the unbuilt interstates in NYC; and the still under-construction interstates... And some of these maps have different / old interstate numbers (such as I-86 in CT, and I-684 being I-87; and parts of I-287 signed at I-95 before the cancellation of the Somerset Freeway...)

I think you can still get Esso maps in Canada...

I have the CarLinkit 2.0 for wireless carplay. It is decent after it connects, but I would be very annoyed if I relied on it every time I drove the truck. It takes about 30s to connect and has a good 15% fail rate to connect. There is version 3.0 now, I do not know if it is more reliable.
The good side is that after it connects it really works great.

So far I've been relatively pleased with the tech package but I also don't consider this to be an expensive vehicle at $45k.

I still sometimes use written directions to get places. friends were trying to get me to their beach area house without paying tolls on 95 and minimizing all tolls. Hell I missed a turn somewhere and still got there just fine only paying the toll on US 1 you can't easily avoid. where ever I missed a turn I still found my way to the next route #. I still had Google maps up to see traffic info. thats only thing maps can't help you with.

    Morning guys,

I received my Carsifi in the mail over the weekend. Put the app on my Sams21 Ultra 5g, and connected. Very simple to connect.

There is a 5-10 delay to connect but, I love being able to use the wireless charger, and AA at the same time.

I bought a small 90deg usb adapter to better route the cable straight down. Then 3m double stickied the puck right under the USB port.

    Highly recommend.

Interesting topic. I also had a 85 Toyota pickup manual 2x4 SR5 many years ago. Loved that truck. Since then I've been thru a 95 Tahoe, 98 C3500, and currently have a 2003 F250 CCSB 4x4 7.3L diesel truck. They all have their issues and buying used is a huge gamble for what your maintenance costs are going to be. I just sold a recently purchased vehicle - 2021 Acura RDX Advance w/SHAWD. It had all the bells and whistles. It was fun to drive, but I really didn't trust that turbo 4 banger for longevity and I really need a truck. So I sold it earlier this month for 5k over what I bought it for 8 months ago (CRAZY MARKET).

I will buy a Tacoma next. They can be hard to find in today's market (chip shortage and war). I do understand that the technology is very old and lacking, but that IMO is good. Just look at the new Fords, Chevys, and Rams with all the ultra technology. Nice, neat, but its not for me and it takes highly trained technicians to service the vehicles and even then... electrical problems are hard to diagnose. Gone are the days where... Oh, its probably a bad ground wire. lol, I even work in IT with computers and computer systems for the last 25+ years.

Heck, just look at today's smart phones that cost around $1k. It is a computer and it requires you to reboot it every so often due to bugs. Same goes for computers you might own. They require a full reboot or errors will happen.

These ultra technology vehicles can sometimes require a 'reboot' to fix issues too. Don't disconnect the battery cables and touch the cables together to drain all capacitors as that can destroy sensitive computers / chips in the vehicle. Note: There are ways to drain the stored energy using a resistor, but make sure you know what your doing.

    Sorry
::: steps off soap box :::

    TL/DR;
I want a reliable vehicle that I can own for 20 years and not cost me a fortune in maintenance. That is what Toyotas and Hondas are known for. US Mfgs just don't have the reliability of the Japanese Mfgs. Sad, but true.

ha, I went on and on and didn't even post anything to the topic in question.

I thought I would be stuck with the built in head unit / infotainment screen with a 2022 Tacoma, but I found that there are many owners that showed some upgrade options.

A couple brand name replacement head units:
Fit in stock location - Pioneer DMH-WT7600NEX
Larger then stock - Alpine Halo9

Also installing and configuring an iDatalink device (Maestro RR2 or other box) to plug into the existing wires/functions to bring back the OEM functions and steering wheel controls. There is at least one post covering the Maestro RR2 on this site https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/new-maestro-rr2.632115/

You can also find YT videos on a 2019 install of the Halo9 + RR2 on a Tacoma. Just search Tacoma installer Diaries 203.

So even with the very old tech stock, it is not too big of a deal switching out the head unit / infotainment center IMO. I'm planning to do this mod at least. Possibly speakers and amp upgrade too. Mod/Upgrade and make the truck what you want.

    Good luck.

I can live with all of it, but no HD radio does suck balls when you are used to it.

Agreed. I had an 18 off road with almost no options but it did have HD radio and radio replay which I really liked when listening to sports but had to take a call. I thought something was just turned off. Turns out the new headunit doesn't have either. Pause and replay foe satellite radio only. Strange and disappointing they did that.

Absolutely love the truck otherwise though

I may be the only one who actually likes my 2019 radio

I keep mine in 3 panel orientation, w/ audio/weather/GPS showing. It’s responsive, bluetooth connects super quick, and I’ve never had any problems worth noting. I’d love to have Carplay and it seems ridiculous that a 2019 vehicle would not have it, but with the exception of apps like Waze, etc. being available on screen, the Entune system certainly seems to accomplish the same thing. I can read and reply to texts, take calls, see all my music/playlists/podcasts, stream my Apple Music radio channels, etc. Obviously it sounds like Toyota infotainment is lagging behind other manufacturers, but I really have no complaints. Works great for me.

I’ve not seen radio replay on my 2019, though admittedly I don’t fuss much with terrestrial radio. Assuming the feature would be carried into ‘19. Were does one access it? I may just run out to the truck and see if I can find it.

I traded into a 2023 but here's a stock pic. That pause button at the bottom will pause live radio and then you can resume where you were at after a conversation or a phone call or if ordering food. I really liked it for taking phone calls. It pauses automatically when taking a call.

Right on, thanks. I didn’t realize there was such a feature so I never connected the dots regarding the pause/play button on the radio screen.
