working on that. Not sure I have time to sew up my own so I may just buy a dac tent. With the single platform and the front half on the passenger side I can sleep diagonal in the bed, so in theory I could sleep with the canopy closed.

I did the WABDR in my canopy. It sucked. I would use a cheap 6 man and a cot before I did it that way again. Just wad it up and toss it in a tote then neatly put it away when home.

    @WrecklessAbandon,

I’ll have to sit this one out. I don’t have coverage at work for that week.

Hope you all have a killer time out there.

I just did an impromptu run of section 2 yesterday on my way back from camping at Rimrock Lake. It's so dry after the ridge. Deep rutted out tracks but nothing troublesome.

It was sort of a speed run, did the section from Bethel (US-12) to Nile (WA-410) in less than 1.5 hours.

I did half the route last year in a canopy with a Topperlift tailgate tent and an Exped Megamat Duo. It was great. Guess it all depends on your setup.

I have multiple ground tents and I will pack one just in case. I thought about getting one of the cheap "instant tents" that fold up into a pretzle just to make setup and teardown quicker. For the price of 2 nice inflatable matresses and the wood for the truck bed I could have bought a cheap rtt. I quickly went down the rabit hole from a $600 tent on the roof for a couple days to an alu-cab rtt that just stays there and decided to back off for a bit. While a rtt would be nice I don't want to have to store one when I'm not using it and I don't really want to tote it around on the truck all the time. Bonus is the 2 air mattresses fit into the bunks my kids use in our travel trailer and they commented how much comfier it was this past weekend.

I'll just throw it out there that since I got the Softopper and have been sleeping back there, my camping experience has gone from hella fun with some miserable clean up / airing out at home to pure joy regardless of the weather.

But, I do miss camping on a motorcycle. Never really minimalist for what I could pack along. Haha!

if I had a longbed it would be even easier as I would just shut everything up, being a short bed I would have to sleep sideways and not much room to move. Once you add warthog into the mix it'll likley require tailgate down so I want to be prepared for both scenarios

I thought I could tough it out sleeping in the fetal position if the bugs were eating my face and I had to close the canopy. It just sucked.

    I hear you there.

Camping was in the decision tree when I bought. It paid off even though it took a couple years to settle out on what the situation was going to be for the canopy. There's still a part of me that would want a wedge camper if I had enough storage. The costs just don't add up though, as cool as they are. GFC V2, SuperPacific, and AluCab on the far outside all hit the marks.

If we didn't have an actual travel trailer all the options you listed would have been things to consider but I seriously doubt the family would enjoy it as much as I think I would. With our new campsite up out of lake stevens it is super easy to just pack up some basic consumables, drive up and have a cold fridge ready to go. It is 100% glamping and at this point because the kids enjoy it, the wife enjoys it so naturally it doesn't matter what my opinion is.

Oh hell yeah. We've wanted an RV / TT for literal decades. Off site storage has been the lynchpin this whole time.

We borrowed a middle sized Class C back in the early 2ks well after our desires were churning and loved it. We never had a capable enough tow vehicle until the Taco. Things are just moving like molasses. Hahaha!

The same thoughts of family enjoyment with a wedge camper rolled through my head. I thought it might be inspiring to them until reality slapped me upside the head. In the end, it would have been a waste of effort.

Glamping is worth it to get the family out there. I'm really glad that your fam is digging it. Ours missed the boat. I'm just hoping that they discover some form of it down the road.

I need to figure my shit out and put in for vacation time or not. I start hunting on the 24th. I should probably be out scouting on the weekends before that. But WABDR is fun too. I offered the kids to miss school for a week and enjoy nature and they are like "meh, would rather go to school and play games in the evening". Which is why I need to force them to go.
