i think it's designed to run on 91, then detuned for 87 octane.

I think it's designed for Tier 3 test fuel.
Thing is, Toyota was an early adaptor with the '16 Tacoma. Tier 3 wasn't a requirement until 2021
So what is Tier 3 fuel? Tier 2 fuel was 91E0(indolene)...Tier 3 is/was an attempt to use a fuel more common in use. But, the EPA made a lot of different proposals and changes in the years leading up to the transition. All the while, Tacoma maintained their [early] Tier 3 compliance. IIRC, it went from 87E10 or 91E0 to 87E10 and 91E0 to 87E15; not certain what they finally settled on.

My point is, different year 3g Tacomas may vary on what it was 'tuned' for.

As an aside, there is no requirement of the manufacturer to publish/recommend the same octane they tested with.

You might see some better performance by doing that rather than sticking one grade all year round. Of course people switch octane levels for a reason. Back in the old days, people used to put higher octane gas in older cars to prevent engine damage and pre ignition.

In a port injected vehicle, the piston heads usually develop carbon buildup due to the gas being spray through the intake. By the time it gets to the cylinder it’s already a very fine mist and does not wash away carbon deposits as easily as let’s say, a direct injected vehicle.
In a direct inject vehicle, The fuel is sprayed directly on top of the piston head within the cylinder chamber. When the carbon levels increase on the piston head, the compression goes up in an engine because the volume of displacement decreases due to increased carbon presence. Sure you’ve got positive crank case to prevent any crazy issues like blown gaskets.

For an instant, the increased compression could then cause preignition due to increased cylinder pressure (compression the same amount of air in a smaller space). Pressure goes up, so the temperature goes up. This seems to correlate.
I believe the 2.7 is port injected..

I get this (light pinging during light acceleration) in stop-and-go in traffic on a real hot day. Without getting into which brands, I switched to another named-brand 87 and the ping went away.

What previous replies wrote. Try changing brand of gasoline, higher octane, etc., go from there.

The 3.5 V6 has a compression ratio of 11.8:1 this ratio in my opinion needs a higher than 87 octane so I’ve been using top tier 93 in my Tacoma since new and it performs perfectly.

Some will say the ecm adjust the ignition timing (variable valve timing) to compensate for lower octane but that only works in a perfect scenario. Yes you can use 87 octane but to achieve the full potential IMO use 91 and above octane.

Not once have I ever heard pre-detonation (valve ping) at any rpm or load. For all you critics this is JMHO.

    Yep.

I dunno why so many folks on here say that the 3.5L is designed to run on 87. No its not. The manual clearly states "select octane rating 87 or higher"

Ive used 91 octane after dealers fill for about a year, stock ECU calibration. Engine always ran great, none of the "TW complaints"

Now running premium SFOB tune on 94 octane (manual only full otto cycle performance tune) and this engine is an absolute beast. I laugh when guys say this engine is a "turd", "gutless" etc. Its got more than enough power for normal everyday driving.

My dad also only puts 91 octane in his 2013 4R.

Thanks. Will give the fuel change a shot and see if it makes a difference.

Toyota use RON method for octane specs
    US 87 =91 RON

Here is a page from the manual:
    fuel type.jpg

Very clear its US 87 or higher, or 91 RON or higher.

FWIW all my japanese marque vehicles ran better and got better fuel economy on 91 or higher.

No, 87 octane is not the same as 91 RON; while 87 octane refers to the standard "regular" gasoline in the US, 91 RON is a higher octane rating typically considered "mid-grade" or "premium" gasoline, meaning 87 octane is generally considered lower than 91 RON.

91 you are referring to is 95 RON.
If you want to compare octanes, datalog ecu while driving on 87 and 91. Performance on 91 is marginal compare to the difference in the price.

I already have in post #36.

it’s not a big deal you can be right if it makes you feel better.
