Can you provide your spec sheet to show what you got on your truck and for how much? Typicall when I think of loaded OR’s I assume it has the premium package or advanced tech packages. Those can top 45k at least.

this is close to msrp for Trail editions. Mine was 41.4 msrp. Actually cheaper than any local OR’s. The trail edition is a 3765 package on a 4x4 SR5. And I think most have the technology package. So msrp is going to be at least 40-41 before options. Here’s mine as an example.

This is a good deal btw. If you read about what everyone is paying in the mega thread this year, to get it only $500 over msrp is totally acceptable. The people getting discounts off msrp are buying like 2wd SR5s in remote areas. I myself am paying 619 for an appearance epackage, best I can do (although go then to do free tint and free mats).

Especially for what is a rare model. People may not always agree with the value of the Trail vs the OR, they’re different trucks in terms of philosophy with different strengths and weaknesses. The trail is hard to find hard to buy. So to not get a rarity markup either I think is good. If these make it to lots they’ll get “adjusted” hard.

Yea I got lucky. I started calling around to dealerships in early October and most were taking "pre-orders" with a deposit.

When I talked to this particular dealer they scoffed at the idea of preorders for vehicles that hadn't been allocated yet, and they stated no dealer mark up, and told me up front delivery and dealer fees would be around $2k.

Very refreshing to work with a dealer thats not trying to screw me at every turn

I can’t speak on loaded OR’s, but I do know my OR’s sticker was $39,248. I also know $47,500 can buy you a TRD Pro. I feel like I’d rather save around $1-2k to get a off-road with minimal options or just pay the extra $5-7k to get a manual pro with no add ons.

I would point out that you cannot walk into a dealer and find a manual Pro right now for MSRP. Even if you did find MSRP, there's endless stories of people waiting for months and months and never getting anything.

For my truck, for instance, I required the technology package and an automatic, and actually was wanting an OR or a Trail. I love both trucks, different styles/uses for sure.

I have been waiting over a month for an allocation. This last time, a Trail and an OR popped up, both at different dealers. Trail Dealer allowed me to remove ALL port options, saving me 1500, and offered more value in the mandatory 619 dealer package along with free tint and mats. OR Dealer would not remove 1500 of port options, and did not offer as much value in their 695 dealer package. So I ended up saving roughly 2000 by going with the Trail, making my trail cheaper than the OR. So YMMV. I feel like everyone is getting different deals, regionally and dealer to dealer.

Most Auto OR's sold today are going to be, with destination, 42 minimum. And that's before port options.

I think the thing that complicates comparing pricing is the port options. some trucks have some, some don't. They are loading these poor trucks down with tons of port options (sidesteps, paint protection, etc.) which is skewing MSRP.

I am glad you were able to get what I consider a very barebones OR. That is how it should be, if you desire it as such. I personally would have been also happy with an OR with just headlights and technology, but good luck finding that, and for sticker, in the color you want, in your state. And that is why so many wait for months and months.

Sadly in today's market, the two options you are describing are unicorns. I am truly happy you got the truck you wanted for a good price!

    Wow, where?

Was it $47,500.00 Including taxes etc.? If so, that’s a crazy good deal in this climate.

its more of a sore spot for me, here in Canada you need a trd pro ($63k) or a limited to get LED headlights. When GMC Sierra work truck has them. Even a mid grade frontier has them! My tundra sport premium has them standard and it’s a dinosaur, all things considered.

the chrome reflector housings ruin the look of the front of the Tacoma IMO and I’m awaiting my 2022 OR premium. But I do not want to pay $3,000 here to get OEM LED’s

Then why wouldn’t you also just want to save another $1-2k and buy a off-road? $2k would buy a much better lift than what the trail would come with.

Because i hate the wheels on the OR, upgrading the wheels alone would make up the difference. And the OR doesn't have the grille i want, another upgrade id have to pay for.

Also, I have no need for MTS and absolutely do not want a smart key. It does suck that it doesn't come with the LED headlights, other than that I'll be putting an aftermarket lift on the truck regardless of trim level.

$2k will buy you wheels, tires, and a pro grill… plus the stock OR wheels and tires sell for $600-$800

I think what BSS is alluding to is that some people don't want to modify their truck. This is a forum, which is a microcosm of people who love these trucks, and want to tinker and modify them to their heart's extent. Which is great! However, the majority of consumers, and many of us here, don't want to do that. Just want a stock truck that comes from the factory that way. You won't get much money back for mods, some effect warranty coverage, and all in all it's nice to enjoy the reliability and stock nature of a stock truck how it's supposed to be. A stock trail edition will sell for more in 5 years than a comparably equipped OR that has been modded to oblivion. Harder to sell.

This is where we usually see someone say "Why would you even buy an OR? You can buy an SR and put 10k into it and it'll smash the OR. The same logic would go farther and say the TRD Pro is useless, why not drop 20k into an SR?

Because the truck is cool how it comes from the factory, and not everyone wants to mess with modding. And this, I think, is what this super small subset of the Tacoma community is after - after all, the Trail in this form is only a 2022 model.

I would also note that at least the Trail comes with a factory lift, unlike the OR, and as I said prior, my Trail was cheaper than any OR that has come into my area that wasn't completely barebones (ie no tech pack even). However, barebones Trail vs OR, the OR is cheaper. Current market conditions have to be taken into account. You CANNOT just waltz in and buy your ideal choices these days. I would've loved a more barebones OR too, but my region is not doing those these days.

The one thing I do want to note that has been a really good question a lot of us have had is why the Trail and OR can have so much overlap pricing. I agree with you there, it IS weird, but it's just how it works when you look at the spec sheets. I did a lengthy comparison post earlier, and it explains this, you may find it illuminating as to why people go one or the other. Personally, I think it's awesome Toyota has offered another choice for people depending on your desires! I think it means something to people as well to have something Limited Edition. You see an OR every day, you will not see a Trail even once a week. They limited them to 7000 units in 2021 and I personally didn't even find that one cool.

I agree with you, that if you wanted to build your own truck up from the ground up, that you could get better components for a "deal". But that's not everyone's goal, capacity, or desire. See my prior post #96. I don't think there's any need to hate on members that are excited about their new truck. I always see people saying it from the perspective of "Why didn't you buy a cheaper one and mod it heavily", not the other way around. I wonder how much flak TRD Pro owners get from all the lower trim level owners who drop 10k of mods in?

No hate. If you don't want to shop around for better deals that's on you. Truck modder or not, doesn't matter. The prices shown are way too high. That's truly and obviously the point of this package. I'd like to see actual details of the prices... Not just a vague description of "add ONS".

The fact the "trail" package costs so much for color coded accessories should be a clue... It's a glorified sr5.

I mean yeah I agree for the right person the trail is great, but I just feel it’s priced strange.
