Some owners expect a different driving experience and reaction of their truck. They don't want (nor get) a race truck. We have a market where folks can change their shocks/tires/radios/chrome bits...whatever....and there is a market for tunes for the same reason. Some folks want or expect something to be different and other folks can make that happen for them. I'm not putting a supercharger on my truck but they sell um.

Depends on who you listen to. Ive heard varying replies to this question, but I haven’t seen anything official..

A tech explained to me that it isnt just a 1K mile ‘one and done’ interval to sample your driving habits, “that would be silly…”. For example if there are multiple drivers sharing the truck, one driver has a better experience, and the rest are SOL? It seems like different random people using the truck wouldn’t receive the intended results.

He explained that its constantly relearning and ‘updating’ itself given its current operation. And in a simplified explanation, most trans TSB’s have just been more comfortable and steady shift points …

I really don’t know what info is accurate , vs opinion/hearsay. The always updating sort of makes sense, but I’m not an expert.

I have been screwing around with my Mustang GT and not lurking here as much and Holy shitbalz I can't believe the Taco transmission is still a first page topic.

So to recap it's still: Tune, Regear, TSB, ECT, Get a manual, Live with it, or sell it? Got it. Carry on...

That is the problem here is that there is too many complaints against the Taco. Why they buy them I don't know. I have been buying Tacos since 1993 and never seen as many complaints as the Gen 3 maybe because their is a website or forum of which we did not have back in my days. Like Gatordog says sell it or live with it jeez.

8,000 threads on crappy transmission performance, and yet so many just say it's just learning. It might get better by a little bit, but the transmission engine combo in this truck isn't a good one.

Thats because there are ones mostly on tw that keep whining about how bad they are. What about the thousands out there that are fine with these trucks? Maybe thats why people must keep buying them.

Just drive it, it’ll keep adjusting and there’s nothing going to hurt it. Everything is computed to certain max points. If you have problems with shifts one try unplug battery and depress brake, it may rest itself but if problems come back you may need to get a tuner and delete some logs out ecu. Or take it into dealership.

Spend the money for a KDMAX tune. Full stop. It turns your rig into the truck that should have shipped from the factory! @TWTaco

Today I met (8) owners I've never met before. After talking we tuned. After tuning they test drove. After test driving they where all so thankful that the tune did everything they expected in fixing the tranny and throttle quirks. I can't wait to hear each of their long-term user reviews. Point is many owners find quicks with their trucks and seek solutions.....then they get them. Only one owner may potentially regear later as they tow heavy but that was a 2nd gen Tacoma.

I am thankful to be part of the solution for the owners that recognize the potential of their truck then take steps to achieve it. We don't need to settle for 'fine' if we don't want to and that's pretty cool.

I got my truck tuned last week. 2018’with 54000 miles and never felt like it shifted correctly till now. I did the the overland torque tune and it feels like a truck should. No gear hunting and holds gears perfectly. Better gas mileage also. Has enough torque to hold 5th and 6th OD gears for longer. I can’t even believe that tuners can program a computer better than the Toyota engineers. People say it’s the EPA but I think that an excuse. I get better gas mileage now than ever before.

It blows my mind that these threads are so common still. Like do any research on a buying 3rd gen and the transmission is one of the most talked/debated about items.:confused:

My Taco is now 1 1/2 years old and no issues with the trans shifting or motor. I find tunes are just another placibo pill. just saying but they sure sell a lot of them to new 3rd Gen owners.

In my area with all the hills I have found sport 4th gets the best mileage and performance and yes, this is with ECT on.
