I live in a hilly area in southern new england with the berkshire range to the north and the taconics in my backyard. Truck always does best in the D mode without ECT. Transmission shifts spot on for the conditions. Even in S5 towing its just 4 mpg less vs. what i normally get not towing anything.

I have a 22 TRD Sport. I just installed a Sprint Booster and it made a huge difference. The booster is installed at the gas pedal. What it does is modify the signal to the throttle causing a much much much better response to the throttle plate. It also opens up the throttle more.

I got a 2021 with 34,000 km with no issues of it shifting up and down while on hills unless I downshift it my self. Better have it checked at the dealer as it is under warranty. just saying.

Toyota must have addressed those issues in 2020 as my truck has had none of those problems, and its bone stock.

I'm still getting used to the AT on my Tacoma as well. I've always had a manual car (traded in my MT Civic for my Tacoma) until now. In my case, I got an AT this time to make it easier for my wife to drive.

they are right. the truck is constantly learning and adjusting for weather conditions, driving style, traction levels, octane levels, ethanol levels, etc. honestly, it's very complicated and it's always learning so that's probably why people have such different experiences that can change at a moments notice.

Out of curiosity, can you check the rear axle sticker in your Sport?

I will when the weather gets better. Spring maybe. What would the sticker say if I may ask.

Tunes are definitely not a placebo pill. I’m running SFOB on 94E0 and it really woke up this 3.5L. Although the stock tune was fine, my biggest complaint was throttle response.

It is on your door jam sticker, along with paint code, trim code, etc.

Sorry if I'm beating a dead horse- I have a 2022 2.7 access cab with 2500 miles, but 2000 to
2100 of those miles are on the interstate. About 5 weeks ago (when it cooled down in NC) and when the truck is relatively cool it feels like the transmission (or differential) kind of grinds (usually just once) between first and 2nd?? within the first .25 mi --it doesn't seem to be searching and just wanted a sense if this is "normal" I usually let the truck warm up about 3 minutes before leaving. Thanks

Does not sound good to me.

Best If you grab a recording device and record the sound if you can and bring it to the dealer as proof because if they can't replicate the issue, they will write the dreaded words "no problem found at this time".

FWIW: with a couple of thousand miles on my stock '22 Sport AT, it's shifting seems to have improved over time. And when I am on a steep incline, I will just pop the shifter left and it will place the transmission into 4th... When I top the grade, I'll just pop it back into D. Even in the winter (when I think suppliers go to a winter formulation) on 87 octane with Ethanol, I'm averaging 21.5MPG in the country. Not bad.

KDMax tune totally changed my truck. Before the tune, she was constantly shifting gears up and down especially on the highway. After the tune, she would hold the gears for much longer and behave more in line with what you would expect from a proper truck

Thanks for the replies- I was definitely worried the dealer would not be able to reproduce as it only happens 1x when cold-I will bring my camera to record- and I'm going to test having it just in gear 1 compared to drive - Also considering the transmission tune but will wait til the dealer looks at it

My story may not relate to you now in any way shape or form, but I bought a ’02 Tundy new and at about 2100 miles I heard a horrifying clunk under my seat, and I knew immediately I had transmission issues.

Hard as I tried, I could not replicate the issue, so I waited since I knew I had a 60k mile powertrain warranty and would bring it up before then.

Forward 60k and two and a half years later, at the last light to get home, It was done all at once, but somehow managed to coast the last mile and up the driveway.

It never moved after that and was towed to the stealer still under warranty at around 50k+, where they replaced the TC and flushed out the ATF.
Following the repairs, I traded it for the ’05 SR5 Tundy that had the color and options I wanted, as I was afraid there could still be some debris left over. to finish the job.
In summary, chit happens and right or wrong, that’s how I handled it lol!
