Not normal at all. No transmission auto, or manual should grind if operated properly.

Thanks the Hammer- Definitely considering that as an option - I actually got the lifetime warranty so we'll see how it pans out- tried to capture the noise on video and cell phone but you feel it more that hear it- (Is what I discovered) still even if the dealer were to flush the transmission I'd probably be worried about reliability for a long time

To speak a little about how these trucks are always learning. I was given a loaner 2022 Tacoma off rd at an appointment that the dealer needed my truck a 2nd day. Same truck as mine, even the color. The loaner must have had the crap beat out of it because it ran like a raped ape. My babied Tacoma felt like a 4cyl in comparison. I just can't bring myself to romp on mine even though the loaner was more fun to drive.

I think these truck all run somewhat different. Idk if its got to do with the learning process, or what. My truck runs well, a buddy had a 2019 with the same engine and transmission, same updated tsb. His truck performed like it was lacking a bunch of hp. Only difference, i have a year newer sr5 access cab, and his was a double cab trd. Your not the first one to notice this.

I have no problem with mine but there was definitely a noticeable difference. Loaner has 9k on it and mine had under 1k at the time. My avg , almost local driving at the time, was 14 mpg loaner was 11 mpg. So I just figured it was stepped on pretty good.

Definitely true if it was a 2wd pre runner . 4wd trd are heavier and feels a tad slower

Is this city? Is this city/highway? what is the distribution of time doing stop and go, vs. constant or near constant speed (i.e. without stops)?

    That is horrific MPG.

So I got a 2022 Tacoma trd off-road MT with just over 20k miles. This weekend I’m in some stop and go snow traffic and I lose power for a second and a transmission failure message pops up on the center screen with an audio message to pull over and contact a dealer. As I got power back in gear, I got to shift and get over and as I get to neutral in the shift it wouldn’t let me put back in gear.(Once the car was off I did have free movement in and out of gears and the car had no issues starting and idling) Long story short, I towed it to the dealership and they are supposed to look at it sometime this week. The tough part is they told me if it’s the transmission than it’s covered under warranty but if it’s the clutch than it’s under normal wear and tear. But regardless neither should go out this early. What are y’all’s thoughts on what it could be? The smell from the truck was definitely that horrible transmission smell.

All speculation at this point would be the previous owner smoked the clutch?

Dude same thing happened to me today. Couldn't shift into gear. 29k on my 22 Pro. I was told by the dealership it was my clutch and that it was normal wear and tear so not covered under warranty. I contacted Toyota and they said someone will get back to me. Still waiting.

That’s absolutely wild. Well I’m arguing the fact I’m still under factory, so if it is the clutch that’s the only foot I have to stand on currently. I still haven’t got an answer from the dealership of what this issue is yet. So I’m still sitting on only speculation.
