It looks like they switched to salt here. Caught me off guard.

Worse is that they still screwed up and haven't managed it well at all. Roads were still shit, esp last night with ice everywhere at 36F and no wind. The salt washed off in the slight melt that we had.

I hope they go back to sand and the urea compound. Both of those didn't wash off quickly at all and never corroded anything.

Let’s just say if Toyota did not offer taco with MT, I would be driving a 2018 6spd frontier. Not that I hate 3rd gen auto, I drove 2 different trucks and they drove fine to me. This “gear hunting” and all these other 3rd gen AT “issues” are definitely overblown here.

It’s personal preference, both great trucks.

As others have said - drive both if possible. I'm a bit older with MANY knee surgeries, so my standard transmission days are over. I enjoy my automatic, though I did drive the standard when I got mine - just wanted to see how it drove. My son has a standard transmission in his 2002 Tacoma (TRD OR).

I drive a lot - about 70K miles per year (I now have put about 146K miles on my 2019 truck). I'm often in 4WD, and have zero issues on or off road with my truck. I enjoy the auto but my son enjoys his standard...either way you go, you will be getting a terrific truck that has tons of utility and value. Good luck!

I wish man, but it’s been confirmed. I believe since it’ll share a global platform and will be built to suit specific markets around the world, ‘the world’ will get a manual (and diesel), but US/CAN will not. Last I read anyway.
Sales are just non-existent and this isn’t a Porsche where the manual market is strong enough to justify bringing it back from the grave.

    Get MT.

Wife said just get auto since she can “drive” it too. Woman has not even sat in the driver seat once in over a year.

I have not seen a confirmation. Do you have a reference? Just to satisfy my curiosity.

The only article I saw was that Toyota said that they have increased the efficiency of their MTs for upcoming products. Nothing model or market specific.

Not just P-cars, but also the Bronco. They massively exceeded MT sales expectations.

The Bronco is a different thing compared to a Tacoma. What were/are the manual TACOMA sales? Where are the petitions for more manual tacos?

Kinda confirms it without confirming it. There are other sources but I’m too lazy to flush them out at the moment.

It has been confirmed that no 4th gen MT? Was it by Mr. Carnaker1?

Supposedly, the Taco is limited to 5% of the production for CAFE reasons. That was the most reasonable, unofficial thing that I heard. It might have been @Carmaker1 that said it?

It is funny that from what I can tell, we all get about the same average MPGs in real life.

Thanks! I had not seen that post as goons have kinda ruined that thread. I would agree with you on the assessment / confirmation. The engine info is interesting also, esp when the competitors seem to be going with larger stuff, esp Ferd.

Myself, I am hoping to skip the 4th Gen and would like to see what drops with a likely 5th Gen EV. My biggest hope there, other than range, would be a longer travel IFS and a 4link rear.

    this and that...
as far as i know the manuals have hill start. i can start the truck on an incline without rolling back or stalling out. same when you come to a stop on a hill. you can let off the brake and the truck will standfast while you engage 1st gear.

I don't have hill start in my manual. Something else people haven't mentioned, the MT has an old school, classic, "vintage" maybe? key. No remote start on this sucker.

I like my MT. A doubt I every would have used crawl control or the five setting traction control stuff that comes in an auto. I usually turn the nanny stuff off if I'm driving offroad and need extra traction. The rear locker does wonders. I have the parts for the 2wd low mod but haven't done it yet. It would really help with backing up trailers.

2WD low mod is a life saver if doing any kind of towing. But going 50 in reverse is fun too…

Imo, if you do a lot of city stop, and go driving why buy a manual when you could have an automatic.

ATRAC is a brake assisted off road traction control. It mimics having a center and front locker, it gets about 80% of the way there. So when you are in low traction situations and in 4X4 the brakes will apply to one corner if it is free spinning to force the power to go to the other wheels. Its a little weird at first listening to the ABS pump go crazy while you are trying to get over a ledge, but it works well. Same system that has been on the Land Cruiser for years.

I had an Auto 2nd gen and now a manual 3rd gen. If you like manuals, its great. Wheeling in an auto is a little more relaxed. But the 4Low 1st gear crawl is great. It can idle along at 1-2mph.

Biggest gripe with the manual is that 1st is too short for street driving and reverse is too tall.

I just traded my 20 AT for an 21 MT...I had been driving a 5-spd Accord for 10 years and loved every second. I made a big mistake getting the auto pickup - missed the experience of driving a standard...at least I didn't loose any money in the deal...just time waiting.

One point of clarification, A-TRAC is more akin to MTS. There is no direct replacement for crawl control on the 6mt.
