Agree ... a well kept 3rd generation MT tacoma will age well and hold value. Have you seen what nice toyota trucks from the '90s are going for these days o_O

…plus, I would argue the fact that manuals are disappearing not because “they definitely have a lot of down sides which is why they are disappearing from the market” but because so many people today DO NOT know how to drive a manual. Not knocking these people at all because the auto industry has been the culprit for this phenomena by making the manual, a reliable transmission, disappear. Also, maybe our current state of high tech, short attention span, less work culture, could be playing a role in that trend by the automakers to “suit” our needs.

    So true!

I learned to drive a manual in my teens and wrecked a couple of cars...lol.

After finally getting the hang of it, it was fun. I also learned to ride a motorcycle; late in my life but better late than never. That's fun also.

I bought an AT and enjoy not having to shift gears for my daily commutes. I told my wife she could drive it if she likes but has told me on a couple of occasions, "no, that's ok". lol

OP, do enjoy whatever transmission you pick for yourself. You seem a little anxious so I'm guessing you want the MT. Good Luck!

Which one is of course up to you. How you use the truck is a big factor to consider. By that I mean how you will really use the truck, not how you dream you might use the truck. IE, what are 90% of your driving conditions, and does the trans choice matter in that 90% of the time?

    But because you say

I will point out that instant gratification is often the leading cause of buyers remorse.

I think instant gratification is part of why most vehicles are automatic now

I have a 2020 OR manual after having a couple older Tacomas with the AT and if I had to do it over again, I'd probably go AT. I really enjoy the manual, but it's been a while since I drove one as a DD and it gets old at times (LA traffic sucks, which makes drinking coffee while driving extremely difficult. lol). The last AT Tacoma I had searched for gears at times, but it wasn't terrible. Either way you're getting a great truck, but it sounds like you should probably wait for the one you really want. Good luck.

I have both a 2004 Tacoma AT and a 2020 Tacoma MT. I enjoy both vehicles very much. However, the MT (which I waited approximately 6 months for delivery) is simply more fun to drive. I've stated it in another TW thread: The MT keeps me more in tune with driving an automobile. There's something almost visceral in being the one responsible for changing gears rather than simply a passenger subject to the whims of a CPU controlling the gear-shifting. My focus on the driving experience makes me appreciate the engineering and manufacturing that went into the making of the vehicle that much more.

I’ve been driving MTs all my life, but I really enjoy the AT in my truck.

In my opinion, if your truck is going to be a daily driver in lots of traffic, I’d opt for an AT.

If you live somewhere rural with no traffic, get the MT!

I’m sure both will be very capable vehicles for you.

OP - The fact that you are asking this question tells me the answer. Buy the MT. For the money you are spending get exactly what you want.
And for what it's worth, all MT have "hill start" it's called the e-brake.

I haven't read every post but my thoughts are; really enjoy my MT and it's what I wanted. However I live pretty much out in the sticks with very little in town driving. I might get tired of a manual if I was stuck in stop and go traffic for a couple hours.

If you want a MT but go for an AT you'll always say you wish you'd gotten the MT. I waited almost 2 yrs to find mine, and though I do like driving my Dad's AT, I'm so glad I waited.

Not sure I understand why trolls enjoy harassing people on this site for their preferences, their place of residence, what options they prefer on their Taco or any other thing that doesn’t suit their opinion. Short fingers, small feet maybe????

Same here. Been driving 5MTs since I was 17, most recently a 2008 Subaru Legacy GT for 8 years and I sold that shortly after buying my '21 OR Auto. I regretted not waiting for a manual but I have a '22 ORP 6mt on order so I also playing the waiting game. And with today's market I'm basically trading straight across for the upgrade.

I was in a hurry to get out from under the duramax I traded for my '21 AT that I didn't want to drive 4 hours the other direction for the MT that was available and I regret not going for it. I am now in the process in ordering a '22 MT. Go with what you know you want or you will wish you had until you ultimately do.

I think Tacoma world itself does a very good job of answering your question. There's literally a cottage industry that's sprung up just trying to satisfy the volumes of complaints with the automatic's shifting problems. Most of the posts from the people that chose the manuals seems to describe how much fun they have driving them. Full disclosure, I'm one of them. Surely something to consider when you make your decision. Hope this helps.
