I experimented with different things to remove the chrome from plastic parts. I first tried oven cleaner but it didn't work very well at all. Plus, the fumes will drive you out of the room.

Then I tried a bath of strong (labeled for outdoor use) undiluted Clorox mixed with Drano. This started showing results after a week, and the chrome was gone after 2 weeks. The bath has to be agitated daily, and the solution should be renewed every 2-3 days. Use rubber gloves! Actually, I think it would have worked without the Drano. Use a glass pan for this purpose.

The Toyota chrome plating is very durable. Not like the thin stuff that is found on plastic models. After the top layer of chrome flakes off, you will see the copper substrate. Keep the part in the bath until that is gone too. The solution will give off bubbles at the spots on the part where it is working, and will start to turn black from the chemical reaction. When it gets noticeably dark, it's time to renew it.

Ok yeah, dang that was my problem. I gave it 2 days on bleach and cleaner both.

Maybe I'll try and strip the paint off the cup holder and try again with much more patience.

    Thanks for the info.
