what a disaster. Last place, if he doesn't wreck out early. Jimmy had his time and has proven he's not a CUP driver any longer. We all know how his Indy Car 'career' went. Ownership, ok, but stay out of the car

I mean if I were JJ and was coming back to get in a HMS car or something, okay I might see that. And also do it at a track where you dominated. He was never much of a plate racer and with all the safety issues and unknowns it these cars. Why in the hell would you come race on a speedway in sub par equipment. This is why he will never be a legend. Even Gordon won in his last year and knew when to step away. Coming back and subbing for Dale Jr was even okay because he was not expected to win races or even compete. Jeff was just holding the seat and keeping sponsors happy because his name was on the car. This screams JJ trying to honor a deal he had with sponsors overlapping with Indy because he fucked around in that series and found out.

No doubt JJ can wheel a car but he is no legend in stock car racing. The legend is Chad! Jimmy just had to hold the wheel and do what he was told.

Hot damn, finally, someone with same opinion about JJ as me. I've said this for years and the JJ nut swingers would get mad as hell.

I have always said this. If you remove Chad K from the equation then JJ would be no different that Robbie Gordon. JJ came from offroad racing and was paired with Chad early on. Therefore Chad taught JJ to drive the car the way he set it up. And Chad is a generational talent when it comes to sitting up race cars. Other drivers where telling crew chiefs what to change to get a certain feel and Chad was telling JJ what line to take to make the car work. JJ was literally nothing different than a part of the car to Chad. And in the later years when JJ started believing he was one of the greats, what happened. He sucked because Chad quit on him because his head got to big. I never saw JJ do anything in a race car that looked spectacular.

And I'll always believe, JJ's car had traction control as well.

LOL, agreed. I mean at least 80% of his wins where because of the gray area Chad lived in. I have never seen a car be so off and come from several laps down as the 48 back in the day. I remember he would be sitting 3 laps down and I was like. Yep, he will be back in it before its over. And all that was because of who sat on the box, not who was steering the car. I will give JJ that he can handle what most drivers consider an extremely loose car. BUT, I credit that to Chad also as he is the one who knew that is where he could find speed and he trained his driver to deal with it and showed him how it was fast.

I don't think there's any JJ love in this thread
I heard the guy was a big-time partier but kept it all behind a curtain for the sake of sponsors.
I agree; Chad was the mastermind over there. JJ was the racer's version of a System Quarterback.
EDIT: JJ's real raw talent was that he didn't get rattled.

This is a really good point. I can't recall any amazing moves by JJ that stand out in NASCAR lore.

Well, we all knew it was coming.

Happy Harvick is hanging his cup race suit up at the end of the year. I hope he has a few wins this year and makes a run for the championship. He's the last driver in cup, to have raced when it was the Winston Cup.

Nice! Newman had some great-looking schemes through the years. My favorite was the Cabela's #31.

Jimmy Johnson’s best move in a race car came in Phoenix when Chase won his Championship in 2020
