OP, you are ahead of the times. Toyota seems invested in 2WD by bringing back the 4th Gen PreRunner which only comes in 2WD. Also, every 4th Gen Tacoma will be 4 Cylinder. Bottomline, you got a Tacoma. Enjoy it.

The traction control/VSD on these trucks is really great. Better than other manufacturers for sure

Thank you...I was unaware of Toyota's plans for the 4th Gen! My wife and I are excited to receive this truck!

The 4th gen comes with a 4cl turbo with output similar to the current 6cyl naturally aspirated.

I had a '05 2nd gen 2wd 4cyl 5MT for 11 years in the midwest. I got around fine, usually passing 4x4's creeping along like grandma's in the winter.
I'd usually strap in a couple sand bags for winter driving...

It has saved my butt on black ice on the hwy in 2wd couple times...kicks in and keeps you going straight, just let off the gas and don't use the brake

99% of tacomas never leave pavement, even a lot of the ones with all the modifications and armor. I know some friends up in vermont who can rip a trail with just rear wheel drive and some lockers. if i didnt go offroad once in a while and didnt have a snow season, i wouldve gotten the 4x2. I really suggest the OTT tune for the 2.7L, make a world of difference for me considering the hilly roads i drive.

Don't fret over what others think. If it does what you need it to, that's all that matters.

I mean many probably think my 5 lug is worthless, where I on the other hand, find it just fine for my use.

You will want sand over the axle, just like your S10 had. You'll also want to treat the frame annually with something like Fluid Film or Cosmoline, because while you say the roads are maintained, I'm going to assume you get a bunch of caustic chemicals just like the rest of the NE states do.

Thank you! I appreciate you taking the time to leave me a comment and suggestion. I will definitely look into the Fluid Film you mention; you're correct, the roads are drivable the majority of the time, yet they still use deicing chemicals.

Congratulations! Post pictures when you get it. If I didn’t need a double cab I’d get what you got. The 2.7 is bulletproof and I wouldn’t modify it. It’ll last hundreds of thousands of miles as is. And you are getting one of the last new ones that are made.

A lot of the people who run their mouths don’t even need a truck. You got an awesome truck and you’ll love it.

    OP,
Hopefully you got a Manual Transmission. I don’t know how the traction control will work in really bad weather conditions like with black ice. But if it won’t let the rear wheels to spin I would recommend a aftermarket TruTrac and some sand bags up against the tail gate. But the BIGGEST thing is to keep the frame clean!!

Sadly the Tacoma still has rusting frame issues. I wouldn’t worry about the body but definitely the frame. I wish Toyota would dip the frame in a better quality product to protect against rust on the frames! I’m in AZ and purchased an 05 that just sat in a grassy side yard in Portland. So the frame has surface rust and I’ve been spending hours sanding with a Scotch-Brite & a few different sizes and shapes of wire brushes, DA and a small 3” angle grinder with a Scotch-Brite pad. Then blow off the frame, use a piece of cardboard and masking tape then hit it with rattle can. I’m doing sections time…

Im guessing guys who live in sections of the country w/ rust issues can recommend a protective coating. I’m still experimenting with the types of rattle cans. Rest Oleum seems to take forever to completely dry so I’m going to try flat black krylon primer & paint next.
