I got my 2023 Tacoma new off the lot here at Toyota Honolulu back in Dec. 2023 and recently found rust bubbling under the paint in few spots on the roof. I called Toyota and after identifying me and my vehicle the rep told me that I didn't purchase the additional Rust inhibitor package, and that any claims as to rust would likely be denied. After the inspection, I was contacted by email simply stating that the claim was denied with absolutely no explanation to why. I told the rep that for what I paid for a brand new Truck (45,000.00) it shouldn't have rust on it within the first year of use. They must be aware of the issue because they offer you a rust inhibitor package before selling you the truck (That can't be added on after you driver off with it) knowing that the potential for immediate rusting is very high. I am not sure how to proceed with this and I fell like dealer Toyota is just screwing me.

All toyotas have corrosion warranty built into the purchase, any extended warranty package never really does much to help.

It doesnt cover rock chip induced rust but hawaii doesnt seem like it gets those.

Not comforting, but Toyota's website says:
    • Rust-Through Coverage is 60 months/unlimited miles, from the date of first use regardless of mileage and covers corrosion perforation of sheet metal.
Translation, it has to make a hole in less than 5 years. Don't get me wrong, I'd be furious and raise hell for rust on a 7 month old truck on the roof.

Do you have any pics? I suspect some rocks or other road debris hit the roof while op was driving and chipped the super soft Toyota paint and since he lives in an 24/7 salt air rich environment he got rust

I soggiest you fluid film your frame op because that will rust out soon if you don’t also only way to fix your roof is find a good shop on the island have them remove the rust and repaint your roof if it’s a quality shop they will use better more durable paint than the crap Toyota paint and they should be able to blend and match it so no one can tell will cost around $900

That's legit rust. I'd be pissed too. Rust aside, it all looks pretty bad for a 7 month old truck.

What exactly is this rust inhibitor package and how would it be applied to prevent rust under factory paint. Those blooms in your pictures are clearly the result of a substandard finishing prep. My gosh, my 26 year old Tacoma is not showing rust like that, despite being washed once a year and never waxed.

Keep pressing your claim up the ladder until you get satisfaction. Consider Small Claims Court. There's a limit of $5K, but the threat of a suit is often enough to prompt a settlement.

Still don’t know if you called the dealership or if you called Toyota Motor Corp. Forget the dealer, you need to contact Toyota Motor Corp.
