I was disconnecting the DCM module antennas last weekend following this post

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...the-dcm-telematics-silencing-antennas.821649/

. When I was tightening down the passenger side airbag bolts that lock it into the frame, I broke one of the bolts and it sheered off in the frame. The head of the bolt separated from the body and left about half of the body in the screw well.

Since the truck is new it's covered under a warranty, but I'm not sure that applies in this case. Anyway, could I have this repaired at a dealership, and would it be covered under warranty?

    Thanks

I mean the only way the bolt couldve broke is by disassembly or re assembly, which you did. Thats not gonna be covered under warranty.

You could try to claim it was broken but you (or someone for that matter) wouldve had to take apart the airbag to see it, which if there isnt a record of a Toyota dealer doing that work youre kinda still stuck in point one.

Easier to get a replacement from Toyota or the hardware store.

You damaging your vehicle is not covered under warranty. Why would it be?

Not covered. Not to sound rude, but warranties don't cover user mistakes. That should be obvious with anything

Warranties cover manufacturing/assembly defects, not damage caused by owners, accidents, acts of god, etc. The later is covered by insurance.

In any case, a hope the cost of a bolt isn’t going to bankrupt someone that can afford a 30k+ dollar automobile. 1st world problems.

    Thanks for the feedback!

Will asking the dealership to repair the broken bolt issue raise suspicion I did my own work on the vehicle that might void the existing warranty?

I want to avoid drilling out the body of the screw left in the well myself.

I would take it to a regular mechanic for that, dealerships don't want to deal with that stuff and will charge you accordingly.

Probably not, nor will the damage caused by the in-experienced dealer tech (which would likely be blamed on your attempt anyway)

Yeah, I understand this if you've not done it before. You can practice with junk bolts to gain a bit of confidence, though. It's really not hard.

These guys don't know what they are talking about.
Toyota won't just fix it, they will give you a new truck and a special participation trophy.
Just tell the service advisor how it happened and you know your rights.

Yeah, of course they'll fix it for free, and will even polish your shift knob while you are waiting.
