I've owned a second-hand 2023 Tacoma 4x4 TRD Off-Road V6 in white now for an entire week. I joined the forum to ask about buying advice, primarily for the turbocharged 4 cylinder models. Based on advice--and not liking the 2024 I drove--we ended up buying a former rental that a local dealer had on hand. I didn't like the price, but there are no deals to be had anywhere on anything. So given that, the price for a year-old Tacoma with 13K miles was not terrible.

I have never owned any kind of Toyota, but my wife did. She had a 1971 Corolla 4 spd, which she sold in 1976. I don't think it's comparable.

If the on-board fuel economy calculation is even close to right, the Tacoma is using fuel at about the same rate that my 2017 Outback H4 did. Not confident about that, though.

General question: Is there a way to upgrade the OEM radio to include navigation without replacing the whole head unit? Pressing the MAP button gives me a message that it isn't installed and may not be available.

    Welcome aboard!

What turned you off about the 2024 model?

Finding a great deal on a Tacoma is like finding a unicorn. Tacomas hold their value better than any other vehicle in their class. But 13k miles on a Tacoma is just getting past the break-in period, so you got a relatively "new" one.

Fuel economy is not the Tacoma's strong suit (at least not the 3rd gen). Not much you can do about that, other than feather the accelerator and lots of engine braking. Some owners say a ECU tune improves fuel economy, but just as many say it doesn't. YMMV, of course. Most people get a tune to mitigate the infamous "gear hunting" behavior of the auto transmission, and some see a ~1 mpg improvement as well. The point is, if you are expecting gas mileage of a Corolla, you are going to be sorely disappointed.

I am not sure about the stock head unit being upgradable. I use Apple CarPlay for everything.

2024 Tacomas are difficult to find, and I didn't like the 4 cylinder engine.

    Thanks for the welcome.

I am not a fan of the 4 cylinder either. I am lucky I got my '23 when I did. 2024 styling is also not for me.

On trucks without nav the map button should pop up maps if you have your phone plugged in. Plug in your phone with android auto/apple carplay and give it a shot.

    Welcome to the House!

I rented a Tacoma for my test drive.

I have a relatively short drive to work, but I consistently get 21-22 MPG.

    Congrats on your new ride!
