The 2023 Tacoma tongue weight 2.7 L 4-cylinder is 350 ibs (10% of towing capacity)
    3.5 L V6V4 is 640 ib tongue weight (10% of towing capacity)

Why would the tongue weight be different, shouldn't it be based on how much payload & tow bar capacity?

Tongue weight is generally always 10% of the max towing capacity.

Since one example has a a smaller displacement, lower torque, lower horsepower engine, it’s max towing cap it is lower, thus lower tongue weight

"In many cases, the maximum allowable tongue weight is between 10% and 15% of the maximum allowable trailer weight, which includes the weight of the trailer itself plus the load it’s carrying. That weight is typically dictated by either the manufacturer of the vehicle or by the manufacturer of the trailer-hitch receiver that carries the trailer ball."

As was said above, the lower the towing capacity of the vehicle, the lower the max tongue weight.

If you are not pulling a trailer and just utilizing the hitch for a motorcycle etc., you can utilize the higher rating.

What kind of receiver does the 4 cylinder Taco get?

The class IV hitch on the V6 can support the 640 lbs tongue weight. The stock bumper hitch (I assume) on a 4-cyl can not.

If you have a proper hitch, I agree with Marco, up to the point the hitch is rated for.

Thanks to everyone for your advise! I installed a Kurt towbar yesterday, which is class 3. This trailer hitch is rated for 6,000 lbs. gross trailer weight, 900 lbs. tongue weight.
My 2023 Tacoma 2.7 L 4-cylinder has a towing weight of 3500 ibs. My boat and trailer are about 5,000 lbs. I think my truck should handle the tongue weight fine. I only have to tow the boat from the boat ramp to and from my house (@ 300 feet) maybe 3 to 4 times a year, so let's hope it is good enough.
