Regarding a 4cl Turbo vs a 6cyl, I have a buddy I wheel with and one issue he has with his turbo-4 is that when we go up SUPER steep grades he has to floor it to get the turbo to kick in or he can't make it up. Turbos don't work well for slower rock crawling applications.

Fixed and ended up being extremely reliable.
Turbo issues that require you to separate the cab off to replace it? What a mess and failure of design. Turbos have a limited lifespan too, meanwhile the old Tundra regularly went 500k miles. Some even went 1 million miles.

That engine isn't really new. It's been around for a few years in the Lexus LS500. But the turbo issue is indeed a wastegate problem.....part supplier issue, not a design issue. It's really only effected very early ones. That's of little consequence if it's yours though.

And the 2.4 T will be a single turbo. It's basically the existing 2.5 A25 Dynamic Force engine that's been out since '17. It is reinforced and has thicker cylinder walls....hence the reduction in displacement. There will be both longitudinal and transverse versions and it will replace nearly all current 2GR applications in the near future

From what I've been reading the next gen will be a turbo 4cylinder with a presumed 317hp

I’ve driven engines with turbos in excess of 300k miles and had NA engines blow up with less than 100k miles. There is nothing inherently less reliable about a turbo or a turbocharged engine.

people gona act like some of the most reliable vehicles ever made were turbocharged diesels. and even if a turbo did go bad they can be rebuilt for like $500. worse case have to be replaced at $1500.

Turbochargers do not have an infinite lifespan. And all else equal, the same engine with a turbocharger has more pressure and higher temperatures than the version without one

I am almost certain that replacing a failed turbo in a longitudinal mounted 2.4L 4 cylinder in the next gen Tacoma will be tremendously easier than accessing the turbos in the new Tundra.

No recall from what I understand and those that have the wastegate failure are under warranty. Typical issues with first year of a new gen vehicle.

While this is true.....manufacturers don't simply slap on turbos, close their eyes and hope. If the turbo engine is based on an existing NA mill....lots of strengthening and reinforcement go into it. That's why you almost always see the turbo version of an NA engine have less displacement. That strengthening almost always reduces the cylinder bore.

I don’t recall anyone saying turbochargers have an infinite lifespan. I’ve had turbo engines with over 200k miles on the original turbo no problem. I’ve had NA engines fail at lower mileage. Obviously a turbocharged engine will run at higher pressures since that is the reason to use a turbocharger in the first place. As someone else mentioned it’s not as if the designers don’t know this and build the engines accordingly to handle that.
