it's under the truck... Does it even matter? I swear I never even noticed that pinch weld until mounting my sliders (10 years into ownership).

I like to hedge my bets and know the full situation before I make decisions. My first course of action would be to go to a body shop and ask them for an educated opinion on what is going on. They can identify problems like cheap re-coats or bodywork better than most. They also won't try to blow smoke up your butt like the deal will saying it's no problem.

No automotive paint should be soft and uncured days after getting sprayed. Factory paint is barely going to be fresh an hour or two after getting done. If you have soft paint, it sounds like a chemical bonding or mixing issue. The crimp weld area is painted at the same time as the rest of the body. If that part is messed up, the paint going up the door sills is also messed up, etc. Trying to DIY fix the crimped edge right now and forgetting about it might yield paint slothing off the rest of the truck in short order.

Go to a body shop and ask what is going on with the paint. Take that information to a dealer then so you can protect yourself.

Just FYI, if you try to wipe any harsh solvent on super white paint, it will eat right through it. I've used acetone on cars for years to remove contaminants of all kinds (think of maybe road line paint that sprayed onto the body of the car). Quick wipe of acetone, wash it down, buff and wax and you're good as new. BUT BUT BUT on this super white Tacoma paint, it will eat the paint right down to the primer/metal. Found out when I got some overspray on my pinch weld from doing my fender trimming. Looked just like what you experienced.

Not sure. Just trying to figure out if that color is primer and if left the way it is will it rust.

Thanks for the info. So that color is most likely primer that I could cover with touch up paint?

I purchased some touch up paint from dealer thought I would give it a try depending on what dealer says.

In case it’s not obvious already, if the paint is so bad that it is wiping off I wouldn’t spray more paint on it until all the crap paint is removed.

Primer will indeed prevent rust, at least in the short term.

Also check the frame, along the welds.
My '23's frame has light rust starting along the welds.

How does your pinch weld area look? I will check the underside welds.

Contacted dealer and I have sent pictures to the service department. They said it did not look correct and I will be hearing from them soon. I will keep everyone posted.

best bet in case the paint has other adhesion problems. I could see a fix being blamed on you, and preventing any recourse.

Thanks for the info. Did you end up touching up the pinch weld yourself?

No, it was right at the front tire where the fender meets the pinch weld. From spray painting the fender well, some black paint got overtop of the white down there. Never had acetone just rip through auto paint before. I saw it fast enough that it barely went through to the primer. Couldn't tell at all unless you were a foot away. I've since cut some of fender to pinch weld mount away to fit bigger tires so you can't see it ever happened now.

I would honestly mask it off the best you can, and get a can of raptor liner, only spray the front and back of the pinch weld, don't go all the way up to where the drain grommet things are. Will definitely hold up better, and you won't waste your time at the dealer.

Thanks for the help I really appreciate it. Overall how’s your truck paint holding up?
