Those are thick structural steel parts. We will all be dead, every last one of us on TW, before they rust through and cause a problem.

Damn... I live in MN where they salt the hell out the road and my 2020 doesn't look that bad. I park outside year round and get a weekly car wash.

Doesn't matter salt or not. I bought mine in NJ, July and it had surface rust already. 15 mile on truck, basically parked on dealership for 1 month... , all it takes is 1 crack and humidity, and salt then makes it worse.

That's why you go and oil spray it, or oil based under coat. One I did cost me 1K, and touch up will be in 2-3 years. You could get it cheaper and touch up will be needed until every winter probably.

Its worth it, just make sure its OIL BASED, and make sure they do whole process, rust removal and then coating. Also, in mine they did not spray my tailgate, so i opened it up myself and sprayed it in corners and sides by holes with woolwax.

Liquid Brine is 10 times worse then salt crystals.

FWIW, what is mostly rusting is cast iron with little paint or bare steel. Just plain water will cause surface rust. Rust on welds are pretty common and caused by the paint not sticking well to the surface ''flux'' on the welds. [it's not flux like the type you need to chip off using a stick welder.]

Slap some decent paint on it, let it dry and hit it with something like LPS3 or Fluid film. Refresh every fall.

Just a few accessories, mud flaps, bed cover , racks, seat covers, ….
Mine has the same or little less rust on the rear wheels, next to boots, but rear def. is looking un-rested so far. I care less about it, just a truck. I should be more worried about getting prostate cancer.

I woolwaxed mine the day I got it...

Yes, you can worry about it while it rusts, or not worry and let it rust and see what happens...

    - but it seems to me that both of those are rather poor plans...

Salt - even salty air, is quite aggressive to iron / steel. Some of the non-salt de-icing chemicals can be quite a bit more aggressive.

I go to the mountains often so I did not want to deal with any rust potential.

Woolwax seals the metal off, and easily eliminates the reaction.

I am in CA and rust is not common in vehicles - unless you are close to the beach or where it snows.

Any bit of rust underneath and your vehicle will take a big hit in value... should one be looking to sell, that is...

I know I would *run* away, If a car I was looking to buy had any rust.... why assume that unnecessary risk???

My 2017 OR lives at the beach and I use Fluid Film and have zero or little rust. Buy the gallon can with the air compressor attachment if you can, I do the whole job in less than 30 minutes once per year. I also spray it off every couple of weeks with fresh water.

Black rust converter on all exposed ferrous metals and welds, brackets etc. A light coating is good. Anywhere you see surface rust developing. Then comeback with some Cosmoline and/or a creeping spray like fluid film or PB Surface shield and spray on top of it. Using one or the other is sort of common sense. For instance, the metal backing plates for the brakes can rust pretty quick especially if they get scratched. You certainly wouldn't want to use fluid film one them because of the heat so Cosmoline would be the prefered protectant. Also Cosmoline is better for rotating things like the axles, if you even care there's rust on them which I kinda don't. Fluid film is more for places you want the protection to creep, like inside frame and crossmember channels. That's why I use both.

Honestly, your rust is normal. Drive your truck in the rain then look at your rotors after sitting for a couple days. Rust can develop pretty quick.

The areas you were complaining about basically aren’t painted. I guess I was a little bit more proactive than you. Painted all those areas when my truck was new. Every time I rotate tires I take a look under there and I touch up as needed. I hate to say it, but you cannot blame Toyota for the neglect. You have shown thus far. Wash the undercarriage after a snowstorm when brine has been put on the roads. Get under your truck with some rustoleum and spray the areas that have that very light surface rust.

Late spring, I am going to spray Cosmoline.

    OP No worries at all
    This is totally normal
If it bothers you clean , wire brush and paint .
Then like others said you can use a oil undercoating . With a full frame vehicle is never a bad idea if you intend on keeping the truck long term . But overall it’s only surface rust . Those kind of metals will get surface rust in a few days if areas are exposed
Rust on the outside of the exhaust is believe it or not sometimes a good thing . It actually gets to a point and stays like that

I'm thinking about doing that. Do you just crawl underneath and let it fly? Must be messy.

My 2022 OR looked a little like the OP's second picture after only a few months and I'm in AZ. not aware of 'salted' roads where I am and I don't off-road through standing water/mud if I can avoid it (the clean up is not fun). At first I thought it was a bit odd that rust would form so early until I looked closer and realized it was rusting only on the bare metal areas. of course it's gonna rust.

not going to worry about it, maybe I'll get one of those underbody applications others have discussed when I move back east.
