It has a self-cleaning cycle where it will idle rough, as mentioned earlier. Leave well enough alone

I know when it’s in clean cycle but as I mentioned in an earlier post mine does it all the time when the ac compressor cycles on sitting at a red light in drive.

Best way I've found, hands down, to fix my similar rough idle was a 19 hour road trip. Let that engine get up to operating temp and stay there for a long time. Got to Laramie, WY from West Michigan and that idle was smooth as could be.

I certainly know to take it Toyota I was just curious what MudSpike found out when he took his in. Seems like everyone on here instead of helping has some SA answer.

What makes you say it’s sensitive? What does it do when you don’t use top tier gas?

Idles a little rougher and has the occasional ping/stumble.

I think dealer put crappy gas in my new truck. Deff idles much rougher then my last tacoma. I’m at half take I’ll run it empty then fill up with Exxon top tier. If that doesn’t work guess I’ll live with it lol

My Tacoma started at around 7,000 miles with a rough idle at red lights or anytime it idles in drive mainly with the ac compressor engaged. I started using top tier premium fuel and that seems to help. I went by and talked with one of the mechanics at the local dealer he suggested first option would be to reset the ECM but since the fuel helped with smoothing the idle I haven’t done anything cause I don’t want to deal with the relearning process. Let me know how yours turns out with a fresh tank of top tier fuel.

Can’t wait to try it. Some dealers have their own gas stations on site prob the absolute cheapest fuel they can buy. I’ll keep y’all posted. I mean it’s not the end of the world everyone of these 3rd gens I’ve owned were different in their own way good or bad

Yeah, I got mine in July and noticed this. It’s a lot rougher idler than both my second gens. It’s enough to vibrate a bottle in the cup holder. Neutral it's fine. I’m going to mention it at my first complimentary service.

We have have an rx350 with very similar engine. Father-in-law has 2008 4Runners we use sometimes which run smoother. I always use different gas stations anyway and tried the Ethenol free 93 just for kicks. I noticed on the scanguage it gets below 600 sometimes. Raising it to 650 smoothes it out, so I may have tuner fix if dealer can’t remedy. 2200 miles btw and same since new.

Also, my father (2017 Tacoma) and wife both commented on it, so it’s certainly not what others are describing as normal. 2017 Tacoma is smooth as butter.

I noticed mine was rough while sitting in the parking lot while waiting on my wife in the grocery store. 100 degree day idling with AC on. It felt pretty rough and I could see tach jump a bit on the rough spots. I turned the AC off and it smoothed out considerably. Settled @ 500 RPM or so. Kicked AC back on and it started the roughness as the AC compressor cycled on & off.

I noticed it again today, 70 degree day, kicked off AC and all smooth again. My truck seems to default to running the AC when started.

I definitely think there is a problem with the ac compressors they done away with the clutch on them and I think that may be the issue.

    bump,

Several Tacoma's came with loose spark plugs from the factory including mine. After changing the plugs out, fresh air filter and some Lucas fuel system treatment the truck runs and drives a lot smoother. Something to consider if you haven't.

How does it work without a clutch?

Thank you MGM!! That could very well be the problem with mine.

Bubba, I’m not sure how it works that’s what the service manager told me at the dealership.

I may check my plugs, but it pretty much only idles rough with AC on. You'd figure it'd be rough all the time otherwise.

I'll check it more closely this weekend.

MGM.... was it all plugs loose or random plugs??

    How loose were they??
Did you remove & inspect or just torque them down?
