    I’m not trying to get an argument out of you just trying to get more info and figure out what is going on. Can you post some pictures of the entire truck?

    Whoo boy, I hope this process goes smoothly for you.

    Document everything, take photo/videos of the problem area at least once a week.

    Be sure to clarify the issues of;
    - Tacky Paint
    - Not adhering to the ED
    - No dents or scratches on the ED part of paint that would signify impact damage
    - If you can find any thin spots where clear coat is over the gray ED, photo that and specify it as well.

    A lot of the paint under the vehicle isn't "intended" to be painted and Warranty will claim it's just overspray, and thus not part of your paint warranty. All surface exterior areas are intended to be painted (Fender edges, your lower pillars, door edges, etc)

    Regardless of if you have/havent do not provide additional information like cleaning products you used. Unless specifically asked, provide no additional information that could lead to them blaming you for the issue

    I appreciate the advice and will do all of that. I'm hopeful they won't try to explain that hundreds of paint chips in a few thousand miles is acceptable, or my fault.

    My 2014 /130,000 miles Tacoma is white, and except for the normal, front-facing random chips you'd expect on a ten year old truck, (front bumper here and there, leading part of the hood, a-pillars, one above the windshield...) there is no wide-spread scattered chips like this. For me, the tell-tale on yours is the leading edges of the rear bumper and the door-jam. How the heck do those areas get chipped like that in 5,000 miles? Precise hits right on the edge of the bumper all the way down?? Not likely. I could go around my truck right now and count the chips: 10 or less.

    Many of those on your truck don't look like chips. They look like flakes or pieces of paint letting go. Is there any primer damage at these spots that would come with a rock chip or any bare metal showing at the spots? Except for the plastic bumpers, that's what you see from a rock: not this. Even the plastic sometimes shows a little damage from a rock or gravel chips.

    FWIW, I have been on many private and public backwoods gravel roads many times, in Maine and NH. Both improved and unimproved.

    Likely this will be your scenario;
    - Service manager will get back, review, and decline stating "impact related"
    - Request to have warranty rep look at it.
    - Likely the rep will say the same thing.
    - Request to dispute further, you will either go next level up in field warranty or they will refer you to brand engagement.
    - From here, just keep fighting it.

    Same with my 2010. I have a couple chips at the borders of the access cab windows, but nothing a $10 touch up pen wont fix. They don't make em like they used to.

    This is a good point. None of the chips go through the primer (or ED as Walrus called it). There is no evidence of impact on any of the chips.

    Geez. The only time I needed warranty work was when the Ac went out on our Highlander, and they were really good about that.

    It will be major gaslighting if they pretend all those paint chips are normal wear and tear on a truck with 5500 miles. I won't have any paint left in a few years at this rate.

    I work at a Toyota Plant, I'm a QCI repair specialist. 4 months in I noticed issues, had 300+ yrs of factory experience backing me up from paint guys (20+yr guys) along with the VP of my plant referring me. I look at paint repairs from the line daily. The on-site warranty guy agreed my issue wasn't an impact. After all that, Toyota still declined to repair my paint. Next step is FCC, lawsuit, and a letter to the AG.

    I sincerely hope your experience is better

    Yeah: The irregular shapes of the "chips" looks odd. Obviously missing paint, but they look more like bug-splats than small rock chips especially the rockers.

    Some of that may be the anti-chip coating they apply on the rockers. (the bumpy-looking stuff) My 2014 has this and it has some "give" to it. There are no chips on my rockers where this has been applied.

    My white 23 has over 13k miles and i just washed it today. No chips or anything like it. Sounds like you need to call Toyota, and get back to the dealer asap. Not sure I would accept a repaint. That is piss poor, period. Seriously....

    Wow. Paint repair must be so expensive that in a cost-benefit they figure the lawsuits are cheaper than repairing. Better to hear this now than in the dealership, at least.

    Yeah, i don't really have anything to compare it to. Just seems strange that my thumbnail could leave an indentation. Above the rock guard my thumbnail does not leave a mark. Also interesting, that in the rock guard area the chips seem to go straight down to the primer/ed - the rock guard material flakes off with the paint.

    Anyway, I am spinning wheels. There is no way I can figure out why the paint is coming off like this. It's definitely not right, though.

    I always post this when I see others having similar issues. I bought a new 2023 and when I got home from the dealership, I noticed a smudge on the bottom of the passenger's rocker panel. When I rubbed it with a rag the paint came off on the rag. Both rocker panels and the bottom of the front fenders. Use rubbing alcohol on a rag and see if the paint comes off. If it's like mine it will easily come off. Toyota repainted mine. I tried to get them to replace the truck, but they said nope, that's what the warranty is for.fender2.jpg

    Woa. Ok thank you. I just tried this in a small area and the paint rubbed off.

    Holy crap.

    It’s not just Toyota with white paint. Hyundai/ Kia, Honda, Jeep to name a couple.
    All colors can fail over time but white seems to be more common with delaminating for any carmaker.

    With that said there are white Toyotas that come into my shop which are 10+ years old with no paint issues. So I wouldn’t make a blanket statement that all white paint for Toyota is bad……it’s just more common on 040 white.

    Curious if you could hypothesize on how the paint could have been misprepared that would cause rubbing alcohol to make it dissolve? A mistake in the factory - forgetting to add hardener to the mix or something? Or would the mistake happen wherever Toyota gets the paint itself made?

    There is also a bulletin on the white paint chipping in certain places. Might check that out also and see if what you're experiencing is part of that.
