I plan to get a set of these. I was also considering a bed extender - but I am guessing that I will have to choose one or the other, right??

Awesome! I would assume It would be one or the other due to where both products would need to be mounted.

Has anyone found a design for bed stiffeners that mounts under and outside of the bed? There appears to be room between the bed and fender and this type of solution would preserve the bed space and ability to use a bed extender.

Yes. 4WP briefly sold a set for the 2nd and I think 3rd gen that mounted behind the taillight and not in the bed corners like all the other ones that block cargo (large/wide, not all). I assume they didn’t sell well because invisible parts aren’t easy to brag about and get Overland Points (tm).

bed stiffeners … why? what data exists to demonstrate the point of these? is the benefit for the bed, or for the sidewall?

IF you offroad theres flex on the bed-sides, the factory bed also isn't square & this pulls in the back, & just bling.....
    Nothing new...

I’ve been alive long enough to have seen trucks with stamped steel beds have their tail lgates sprung and I’ve looked under my truck and behind the taillights and bumper and seen the inadequate web that’s supposed to keep things in place. I don’t need data to know a belt will hold my pants in place.

If you’re running a rack, RTT, or even just loading the bed heavy off-road, definitely check these out. The 2024 Tacoma’s composite bed can flex more than you’d think, and these channel supports make a big difference.
Cali Raised just dropped a set designed specifically for the '24 — bolt-on install, no drilling. Worth a look if you're trying to stiffen things up back there:

The link goes 404. Your website does show bed stiffeners for 2024+, but it shows holes being drilled. Is this a new version?

3G needed drilling too. Into steel. Almost like it was a band aid or a pretty decoration that will rust. Unless you have seen one that doesn't. Not sure.
